I just had my '03 in for a general/valve service check @ 35k miles and was pleased with the results with the help of a great Top Tech Yamaha serviceman, Ashley Knight who happens to own a FJR +++. His Yamaha Award Page https://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/fivestar/toptech.aspx I feel very fortunate and appreciated his professionalism and love for cycles.

Finding him was a relief, since I have had bad experiences in the past with incompetent/no-care types in motorcycle shops. He was exactly the opposite and very helpful while being reassuring.

Ashley was nice enough to let me look at my top end while the cover was off....clean as a whistle and the cam lobs looked great. My valves were in spec, compression was 223-225lbs across the 4 cylinders, however, he did replace the cam chain tensioner through the YES program. He also changed the plugs, antifreeze, checked the rear spline and suspension, and installed my new rear tire all for $262 at Metro Cycles in West Atlanta.

I am now relieved some of the engine noises were of the cam chain and not the valve and amazed on how much smoother it runs...could not believe it could be better!

So if anyone would like to know of a great technician in West Metro Atlanta, this would be a good choice.

And Thanks to Yamaha for their engineering and backing through Y.E.S., we have a lot to be proud of!!

glad to hear all went well but it needed a cam chain tensioner at 35k miles - seems too early to me?
I kind of thought that too but at my second valve check I replaced my tensioner. Much more quiet!

I had my mechanic take a look at the spockets and chain itself for the cams and he reported that they all looked good... as in no wear.

Unfortunately this was a part I did not see during the repair. It may have NOT been Totally bad but think the Technician felt it was best to replace the cam chain tensioner at this time. All I can say is it is much quieter and since I bought it used, perhaps I did not know what normal was. I have a feeling some of those who think they have tickers, may just have a noisy cam chain tensioner.

I wish I could have saw it and see its condition for this report. It is done and I am glad for that.
