On the recent trip to Hwy 36 with the Nor Cal group, I experienced on two different occassions while entering a simi-tight twisty on a slight incline at about 3000 ft. elevation, the bike felt like it was going to stall. When the bike started to stall, it felt as though the engine was starved for fuel, and then I applied more throttle and the bike seemed like it was losing power. (Not the same type problem Fred H. describes with the on/off throttle/low rpm issue). The two episodes lasted for 5 to 10 seconds each and had plenty of fuel in the tank. I mentioned this to Skyway that day and he asked if I was in too low a gear and I really don't think I was. I have never experinced this before or since and have had the bike at close to 9000 ft. elevations before with no problems. And there shouldn't be any at elevation because the bike is fuel injected anyway. Anyone ever have this issue? Thanks for any input, PM. <><

IIRC, somebody suggested a possible funky Throttle Position Sensor.

I had a similiar problem on my 06 beginning at about 3,000 miles. Bike was acting like it wanted fuel, and then would die. It was simply that my idle was set too low. A quick turn of the idle adjustment fixed it for me. The bike was idling at about half the target idle speed.

Is it possible that your fuel might have been less than perfect? Maybe there was a small amount of water in the tank hitting the pump at that moment. Maybe not but I have had that symptom on other bikes and found it to be from condensation or fueling when the service station was filling its tanks.

could be a lot of reasons for starving fuel (or air)

1. if possible - take the spare key and stick it in the fuel cap - if it happens again - pop the cap and see if there is a pressure difference (vacuum). If so - check out how to clean the vent holes on your cap in fjrtech.com

2. could be fuel lines or vacuum cables are bent, twisted or whatever - check the routing

3. TPS - has already been mentioned, but the diagnostics are easy - check them out

4. Idle adjustment - probably should have been mentioned first - what is your bike idling at?

5. Assuming all that is good - have you done a TPS lately?

and someone already mentioned bad gas - might drop a little Sta-Bil in there and see if that helps - run that tank out and fill up with fuel from brand name station that has a lot of turn over on gas (fresh gas).

6. I doubt it is your plugs, but you might pull them and take a look to see if they are fouled - how old are they?

7. keep the damned thing wound up - there aren't any idle speed corners on that road taht I remember - keep the revs up a bit.

my bike used to stall from a standing start a bit. thought it was me at first, but it definitely got better when I raised the idle up to 1100 instead of the around 800 that it was sitting at. Hasn't done it since.

Maybe this is the problem:

2005: https://motorcycles.about.com/library/recal...recalls055k.htm

All read the same: THANKS TO DEAN WOODWARD, MICAPEAK MAILING LIST

Defect Summary:

On certain motorcycles, an improperly designed throttle position

sensor could cause an intermittently unstable idle when the engine is at

idling speed when the motorcycle is stopped or during low-speed

operations. The engine could stall as a result.

Consequence Summary:

If the engine stalls after the operator disengages the clutch in a

low gear while riding, the rear tire might slip momentarily if the

operator abruptly re-engages the clutch. This could result in a crash

with injury or death.

Corrective Summary:

Dealers will replace the throttle position sensor free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin on October 11, 2006. Owners may contact

Yamaha at 1-888-88-yamaha.

Thanks guys for those responses. Its ironic I posted this problem and now the recalls come up on the TPS on the earlier models. Could there be a TPS snake in the 06's woodpile also? Stay tuned boys and girls...PM. <><
