Started a thread to collect the discussions regarding the AE model's lack of a clutch. Several posts include comments/discussion, SO I figured it needed a place.

My first 2 cents: I ordered the AE model with the YCCC (Yamaha Chip Controlled Clutch) because I'm into gadgets.

Why? Why? Why didn't Yamaha just leave the clutch lever intact, and make the lever activator turn OFF the YCCC and allow manual clutch operation. Then there would be zero issues -- if you want the YCCC enabled, turn it on. If you preferred manual or standard clutch -- turn it off, and use the lever. Seems so simple.

Next best thing- Buy both models. Some days you feel like using the clutch and riding a sparkly blue bike, and some days you just want high-tech and high speed! :p

It really is simple.

Toe, you just gave me the justification to keep my 05 BlueJay(40kmiles) along with my soon to be delivered 06 AE(name TBD). thanks much. :assasin:

"Sometimes you feel like a Nut , sometimes you don't..." :D

I guess that option slipped my mind!.

I have a sport bike (Aprilia Mille), Cruiser (Yami Silverado), Dirt bike (Suzu DRZ-400S), and this will be my first Sport Tourer -- as soon as the FJR shows up (pant pant pant). If i HAD an 05 or 04 or other FJR, that would be an option, but for a FNG -- it would have been nice to select YCCC or regular clutch.... oh well...

for specifics on how it works, try:

https://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/yccs.aspx

Basically there's a servo-actuated clutch and servo-actuated gear-shift controlled by a computer that monitors things such as engine speed, throttle position sensor, ground speed, etc.

For questions on how to move the bike when it's parked in gear -- from what i understand (don't have mine yet), keying on the ignition will allow the actuator to power-up, but tapping or briefly pulsing the front brake will dis-engage the clutch -- as if you pulled in the lever. NOW you can wheel it around in a parking lot without the motor running.

Look at how the AE module sits over the top of the clutch on the L side of the motor. How could you meld the two (manual and AE controls) given that design?

I'm no engineer, so am asking. It seems and either/or design.

FJRottie -- change'd the pic - just for you -- but actually it was for a permit. I'd LIKE to use my JFR picture, but have to wait till mine shows up -- it'll be my first sport tourer type bike.

As for the design question -- I guess I was being more theoretical from the original blank paper -- just design it to be manual clutch first, with the YCCC selectable...

Don't know how they actually designed it for just the YCCC and no manual clutching.

But seems like it can be done -- like the drag guys use an air-shifter and still have use of the clutch (like Dale's holeshot shifter) -- of course they just use an ignition retard, but the actuators could be there...

???
