Do the funky shapes on the 06 fork sliders serve a purpose or are they made that way to give an impression of inverted forks?

They had to put those bumps in to distract from the fugly, fat-ass Nissin calipers. Previous years used the sexy and svelte Brembo units, so no camouflage was needed. ;)

But seriously, it looks to be just a styling thing... doesn't seem to be of any obvious use, otherwise.

in the '06 owners manual, page 3-22, they refer to "compression damping force adjusting screw," located on the right lower fork.

is this new for '06?

is this the reason for the fugly forks?

Compression damping adjustment is not new to '06....my '05 has this adjustment, for both right and left side. '05 also has rebound damping adjustment for right and left side.

Does anyone know if Yamaha split rebound and compression adjustments between the tubes for '06? Meaning, is the right side compression adjustment and the left side rebound?

Yamaha has done this with a few of their other bikes.....just not sure if that is the case with the '06 FJR.....

The adjustments on the 06 are identical to the 03-05 models. The lower fork tubes are much larger. The brake calipers are different. They are 6 piston units instead of the 4 piston units on previous years. The front brake actuates 4 of the 6 fronts and the rear actuates the rear and the other two front pistons.

I was a little concerned about loosing some front brake power with this set up. I shouldn't have been. The front actually stops better than than my 03 does, even with the HH pads. The rear is really, really cool! I quit using the rear on my 03 most of the time. I found it just too powerful, and it tended to lock up the rear wheel without pushing very hard. I rode in the rain Friday and tried to luck up the rear wheel from about 30 mph several times. The damn bike just flat out stopped. I couldn't even get the ABS to engage on wet pavement. It is just a really well thought out system.
