06 heat problem

I went for a ride today after work in shorts (dont give me any grief here it was a scientific test :p )

The official outside air 06 FJR temp reading was 99 - 94 degrees during an hour and a half ride.

NO TANK HEAT, NONE, NADA, ZIP.

3/4 to 1/2 tank very cool. I don't want to hear anyone complain their 06 is a nut roaster. It ain't happening.

I could feel heat from the road on my legs and heat from the manifold as it swept past in the wind. mostly my right lower leg (calf) but it was about like a hair dryer on low setting.

Don't believe anyone who complains about heat on an 06. They must have FJR v.1 :)

 
'05, ridden in 100+ degree heat. Full riding gear with Patagonia fleece pant liners. NO TANK HEAT, NONE, NADA, ZIP.

I have an o5 I still do not understand the heat issue. Today in Lake Havasu its 120 really! I sure as HELL and I mean hell well not go riding in that heat. But I have lived in the desert most of my life and have ridden in hot weather. I notice no more heat from my 05 FJR than my 95 Connie which was never an issue. How much heavier is the 06 that the 05 and is it mainly to address the heat issue! I have read threads saying 40 some saying 60 pounds more. Would that reduce the load capacity Of the bike.

 
took my new 06' for it's first ride yesterday.76 degrees. I kept feeling the tank with my hand.NO TANK HEAT.none. Had a ST1300. Got rid of it fast because it got HOT. The 06' FJR is a pretty darn nice bike.Just lovely in corners. Scoots. :D

 
I commute to/from work every day on my '06. It's been between 96 and 100 every day this week on the ride home. The lower back edge of the tank and the frame get HOT and some heat comes off the bike. In jeans or mesh gear, it gets uncomfortable after an hour or so. More quickly if the tank is below 1/2. It's not a problem with regular riding gear and it can be mitigated by moving my feet out to the edge of the foot rests and spreading my knees out away from the tank. However, if I hug the tank, there is heat there and it's not trivial in these conditions.

After a ride, I've compared the frame temp (by touch) on mine to my friends '05. His frame (right where the funky welds are below the sides of the tank) will take your skin off. Mine is hot but it won't burn you.

Overall, his '05 (with all the usual fixes) throws way more heat than mine but the '06 is not what you'd call "heat free" compared to other bikes I've owned (including a number of air cooled bikes) but it is much improved.

I don't have an issue with the engine being warm. The point is that many other high performance bikes direct the air down and under the rider and/or far enough out to the sides that you don't feel it.

Again, I think they've made worlds of improvement on the '06 and I LOVE the bike :yahoo: :yahoo: That doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement.

I did a little experiment today just to see if I could reduce the heat on my right leg. I noticed that the heat comes out of the vent in the fairing side and follows the contour of the panel, and then wraps in onto your left leg. So I undid the fasteners and moved the panel to the outer position in hopes that this would push the heated air out further and off my leg. It worked and my left leg does not get as much warm air as it did before.

So I have come to the conclusion that these new movable panels need to be in the OUTER position in the summer.

If you ask me, you would feel more heat in shorts. Riding gear blocks the heat somewhat.

I don't feel excessive or bothersome heat on my 04.

 
BMWHD,

+1 on all you comments concerning heat. Its good to see yamaha tried to address this issue and managed to make some major improvements, but this bike gets way hotter than any other bike i've owned throughout my life (other than the st1300 i sold to buy the fjr).

I cant imagine what the 03-05 guys are getting hit with.

Sheesh! You guys and this heat issue don't get it do ya? :huh: I figure if yer legs are gettin to hot..... buy an AE model an' cut the fookers off that'l solve the hot legs deal :yahoo:

I've been riding my 06 now for a few weeks and no issue with the heat. In fact, I'm amazed at how they have controlled the heat. Now, I have not set in traffic at 98 deg and have the fans kick on, but when riding, no issues (or at least no moe than any other big bike). You want to talk heat -- ride a Valkyrie when the temps are in the 90s, you are in stop and go traffic, and the fans kick on. Ouch!!! Big bike - big engine - lots of heat to get rid of. I think Yamaha has done well. Honda also did well with the 1800 Wing in keeping the heat off the rider while stopped in stop-go traffic. Of course, that design resulted in problems in engine overheating (or near overheating) when riding slowly for extended period.

Bottom line: If you are thinking about an 06 FJR, don't let any heat issues be a concern for you.

(2003 here) Nothing more than I was getting hit with when riding my 83 GL1100a or 84 GL1200a. Fully faired bikes in the Texas summer are all gonna be hot. The ambient temps are hot. When moving superheated (120°+) air from the blacktop to your legs/feet, it ain't a gonna cool ya down much 'tawl!

I got a buddy who did that. He says that he doesn't have anymore problems with hot air on his feet now when he rides.

Actually, this guy is an inspiration to me, and is also one of the nicest guys I have met.

As for the heat issue, I rode about 200 miles today in some pretty high temps, and I am convinced that by putting the panels in the OUTWARD position, that it really reduces the heat on my legs.
