I have been reading the 06 owners manual on line (because I don't have a real one yet) and it says the oil light is an "Oil Level Indicator" light.

I guess you could take that 2 ways.

Does the light come on when the pressure goes to "0" due to low oil level?

OR

Is there actually a level sensor to trigger the light, independant of oil pressure?

And if that's true....

Is there no indication of pressure? Are they all like that?

Or did I just misinterpret the book?

Yep, all have oil level sensors... not pressure.
Really!

Thanks for the info. That's a different approach.

I'll learn this thing little by little.

I was one of the people that ordered the shop manual on line. They sent me an 03 shop manual and said they would forward the 06 supplement soon. Most of it should be the same. I better get reading! Hate not knowing stuff.

Thanks,

Oil level vs oil pressure has been a Yamaha thing for some time. Both my '89 FJ1200 and my '98 R1 are/were that way.

V-max is the same. Many owners of them hadd "issues" because under hard acceleration the light would come on. Once they realized it was a "level" gauge rather than "pressure" they understood the oil in the crankcase was sloshing to the back and away from the oil level sensor.
