So what is the result of opening the adjustable side cowling's? Does it allow more engine heat to hit the driver's legs or deflect side air from hitting my legs?

As near as I can tell, and you can confirm this by doing a search on the forum, it makes the bike a tiny bit wider...but not much else.

Actually, I thought you asked a good question. Neither the owners manual nor the service manual tells you the use of each position. And, when I read the Bin O Facts, it seemed to me to be backwards of what seemed logical to me. But I didn't dispute the Bin O Facts as I assumed it was right.

At 115-120 degree temps down here, such a question is very important to me. I wanted to save the sweat of trying the vents in each position etc.

But I think it's too bad that someone couldn't have confirmed this for us here again. It seems to be the consenus that the Bin O Facts is correct. I guess we have to leave it at that. But, as of today, we were a free country and therefore have the freedom to ask questions; silly to others or not.

And just for your information, the Bin O Facts gives the correct orientation to install an oil plug crush washer which I asked about on the forum and my oil plug and shaft drain plug came from the factory just the opposite. I don't think it makes much difference which way the washer is installed but the point is that either the Bin O Facts or the Factory is wrong and it could be either. You have to use information on the forum with such in mind.

+1 on what Harald said.

If its in the high 30's to 40's you can feel "warmth" on your legs with the vents open. You have to have forward motion and not go over 40 to 50 mph. Once the temperture drops down much more and when your speed increases they just provide wind deflection.
