10 Gallon Frankentank on Gen3--will it fit? Yes!

So yesterday, Corey and I finally paid a visit to Dirttracker30 in Hills, IA, which was a long time in coming.

We pulled up to his shop after having some lunch on the way, and stopping in to see the new "Milwaukee 8" bikes in Iowa City at the HD dealer there.

Shade was found, beer was offered, fun commenced. On the work table was one in-process tank, and just a step away was the thing we had come to see--the 10-gallon monster!

As the conversation went along, the question of fitment to a Gen3 came up, due to the differences in side panels on the fairing that now cover the frame rails and hug the tank more closely. So, since Corey's Gen3 just happened to be there, we popped his tank off and fit the prospect in place to see. What we found was that it had been built as if the fairing design was already taken into account.

Dirttracker30 does some really nice work, as the photos show, and has graciously given permission for me to share them here.

Will continue to resolve the video upload issue... Here's a link that will hopefully work. If not, I'll try again soon with some other method--this really shouldn't be that hard, I know...

I remember that risers were mentioned as mandatory for these tanks.

Yeah, the 15 gallon thing is only because Corey already has a TAT going on, and that was the test fit mule of the day...probably wouldn't be running both on any official level.

Well, it's my understanding that that particular one is $1,300 as-is. Beyond that would be only speculation on my part.

While the shape looks good (nicely done), this is going to make the bike much more top-heavy. If I were to want to add fuel capacity, I would want to somehow find a lower location.

Gas weighs about 6 pounds per gallon. That's a 30-pound addition up high -- but only when full. I would assume IBR-type rally riders would learn to accommodate that in exchange for the incredibly farther range.

Gasoline weight in metric units cannot be calculated except by supercomputer.

edit one hour later: The supercomputer says metric gasoline weighs 0.72 kilos per liter. That works out to about 14 kilos extra fuel weight for the mega-awesome FrankenTank that I certainly can't afford now that I have a girlfriend.

Yeah, for slab-droning it probably won't matter much. Low speed stuff (parking lot, garage, etc.) could be handfull as well as any quick avoidance maneuvering (deer, etc.).

Not an issue, but if you're worried about stability, recommend a car tire on the rear wheel

I am so excited to hear that my tank may transfer over to a Gen 3 one day. I think mine is larger than the 10 gallon in the pictures, but at least there's a chance.
