Time to try again! This time, minus the storm in the Pacific Northwest!

Maybe start north mid week on 395, hit elevation mid day, bay area evening, and down the coast late.

any tips are welcome!

route

re-routed with marker points.

added Hwy152 (Pacheco Pass) to avoid Bay Area.

Added hwy 25 for fun, might reverse the order.

If going for IBA certification I'd look at getting receipts at several places on 101 to clearly demonstrate you road that road as opposed to I-5. The fact you had to use the "drag route" option in Google is the same kind of stuff they'll look at in the IBA. Try adding specific via points to the route in place of dragging to get the same shape......and use those as receipt points. Perhaps Santa Maria and Salinas.

Thank you! I think I cleaned it up.

Depending on the time of day you get to Carson City, you might want to bypass downtown Carson City - it is a real drag.

The way to do that is to turn right on Snyder Ave -> Left on S. Edmonds Dr -> Left on Fairview Dr -> Right on the new US 395 N slab to Reno. Least amount of Stop lights and Stop signs this way.

Bay area in the evening? Have you considered I-5 from Sacramento to Hollister and then catch 101 from there? Some forum members in Sacramento/Elk Grove area can tell you the traffic situation on weekday afternoon - can't be as bad as Bay area traffic in the evening if I venture a guess.

The route looks good - and fun. A quality radar detector will be most helpful on the 395, especially through all those little towns with the 25mph limits.

If you hit CA-154 after 9pm, keep alert for wildlife on the roadway (as dj bill mentions above).

First bypass duly noted.

As for going through Hollister, it's about the same miles, so wouldn't matter to me. I'll see if anyone local weighs in.

I lived in Monterey for about ten years and still travel back there to visit family. I would definitely 2nd the avoiding of the bay area, especially mid-week. I-5 to 156 (Pachaco Pass) would be my vote. Have Fun!

Hey, it's California. We have lanesplitting.

Though the Pacheco Pass (152) option is interesting, it's definitely not interstate speeds.

Just did that one (or something very close) back in October. Go have a look.

SS1000 route & story.

Ride down the coast will be mostly done at night if you ride CCW...slow and dark. In hindsight, a CW route might have been a better choice as coming home down 395 would have made the miles roll by more quickly.

Cheers,

W2

Like the idea of the Pacheco Pass (hwy 152), so I made the change. Still have markers that come within a tank of gas.

Not sure when I'm leaving. Got hit with a stomach bug last night, hope it was just a 24 hour thing. Just need a couple nights good sleep.

If you're on 152 anyway, at the east end of Hollister, you need to bomb down Hwy 25 to either King City (if you need fuel) or 198. Either will drop you back on the 101 Serves two functions - first, Hwy 25 is probably one of the top 25 roads in Cali to ride, and second - the CHP are incredibly thick from about Soledad (south of Salinas) to San Miguel (just north of Paso Robles) - so this route eliminates about half of that bother.
