SoCal’s LD Riders Last Ride Of the Year

It's hard to imagine why, butt, a third of LD riders live where it's frozen solid. Their motors have been "winterized" (a very scary word). It's a process akin to embalming where fluids are changed and the life force is removed and placed on a bench with a Battery Tender on it.

All these riders are just grumpier then hell and can be found hunched over their little computers 24/7, wrapped in a tattered blanket, wearing long-johns (with button rear flap), earmuffs, fingerless gloves and peckin' away. The “sit here, twist that” aggression is now directed solely at the little keyboard and what ever pops up on the screen. They're probably typing like they ride . . . some smooth and effortless . . . others herky- jerky, pecking all over the place.

All the while they're mumbling, snortin', dozin’ off and sending each message off with a “smack” of the SEND NOW key yelling “Stuff this up yur candy ass ‘final drive’ drivel ‘n smoke it.” Then muttering “If I can't ride, nobody's gonna get the last word on me!”

Another third can only get out on a rare good day. Some screw little metal studs into their tires, shoes, gloves and butt to maintain traction. And they ride till they can't take the pain any longer and they're always in danger of breaking off a very blue finger or black toe. Butt, just knowing they can still ride puts them into a moderately civil disposition.

While the rest of us out here in the West Coast . . . well . . . life is good. Ride every day or at least every weekend. :^) The electrics are packed away somewhere. And we might even put it on if it gets down to the low-60's! Burrrrr!

Welcome to the SoCal LD Rider's "Because We Cant" Ride-To-Eat

11:30 Noon - 1:30 PM

The Far Western Tavern
300 Clark Avenue
Old Town Orcutt, CA

Phone: 805-343-2211
https://farwesterntavern.com/

GPS: N34 51.899, W120 26.670

Then once we gather and begin - according to tradition, we’ll lift our glasses to celebrate our good fortune to be able to ride today. Then we will honor our fellow LD riders, “Those that can’t (ride that is)”. And wish them a quick end to the “S” words (S-N-O-W, S-L-E-E-T), bike tire chains and ice of any color.

The Far West Tavern is a carnivore's wet dream! This is a real, genuine “Santa Maria Style BBQ” steak house. The Far Western's claim to fame is their “Bull's Eye Steak” which is a prime cut rib eye steak. The 6 oz. center cut filet mignon “Delux” is ~$29 and the 14 oz. “Bull's Eye Steak” is ~$39. Most luncheon items are in the $10-25 range.

This is not banquet food. Unlike many restaurants that require a prepaid guarantee and a limited group menu, we are ordering off the regular lunch menu and each steak is prepared as ordered. There will be “one check per table or group”. Please bring a wad of cash in all faces (Jackson’s, Hamilton’s, Lincoln’s and Washington’s) to simplify the “one- check-per-table/group” paying. A 15% gratuity will be added to each table’s check.

Please be aware that service may be a little slower under these conditions. However this give you all more time for tire kickin’, general bull $hit and flat out lying.

Reno and Northern California LD folks, this is half-way between SoCal and the Bay Area! 225+ miles one-way! Not even a full tank for most of you guys. It's the perfect “last” ride-of-the-year ride. And for you Saddle Sore aficionados from Canada, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas ... come on down!

RSVP: Dean Tanji at [email protected] for a head count. Include the following for each rider and/or passenger.

Name(s):
Start city, state:
Motorcycle (year, mfg, model)

i.e.: Joe Smith, City, State, 2014 Yamaha FJR1800

Respectfully,

Nothing here but solid ice but I suppose I could ride this rat shit old Kawi that's just sitting around. The owner won't care if it gets rashed up a bit.

Just kidding Don. still need to fix one tiny leak.

I wish. Rode today and it was a comfortable 43 when I left Mercer Island, much better than it has been for the last couple of weeks when I've been driving the car. Almost felt warm and should be even nicer at 3PM w hen I leave the office to go home. Maybe a little shower but nothing dramatic. I do wish it was April/May though.

I'm going. Any other central Kali peeps interested? The Candy Butt Ass prez LOVES to poke fun at IBA peeps at these events!

I showed up 15 min. late and missed Carver at the Church. He did save me a seat at the Tavern and the Lunch was good. So today I rode a 650 mile round trip and had lunch with Carver. Made it back home in time for Dinner with Terri, life is great.

Thanks for the Invite Dean, next year I might make it part of a BBG. It could happen, JSNS

650 miles, in ONE day? Your are so getting fined, buckeroo! Very good to see you again, and SuperTanker too.

Thanks to the IBA faithful for not kicking the CBA Krew to the Kerb.

RIDE REPORT - Because We Can … ride that is.

Dec 27, 2014, Far Western Tavern, Old Town Orcutt, California USA

This weekend, Southern California was just absolutely beautiful for 45 LD Riders. Lows were in the 30-40 with a mid-day temp in the 70’s. Almost everybody had dry roads on their way Old Town Orcutt.

Riders were mostly Californians but a few came from Nevada, Arizona and as close as Nipomo – 10 miles! IBR vet Will Lee traveled from Beijing, China! Will arrived home in San Francisco Friday to attend Saturday’s “Because We Can”.

Longest rides were Heidi Still & John Bateman, BMWs, Yuma, AZ, 515 miles! Second longest, Bob Scott & Abbie Purney, HDs, Las Vegas/Henderson, NV, 500 miles. Tom Melchild, FJR, and several others who rode Highway 1, Big Sur, reported seeing many whales.

The Santa Maria style Rib Eye Steaks were delicious! At 12:00 noon, 45 riders lifted their glasses and toasted to honor those who live in the snow, sleet, hail, sludge and could not ride today.

But what am I talking about here on Wednesday, we are predicted for snow on the SoCal coastal hills!!!!
Where’s my ear muffs, electric jacket liner and mitten gloves??

Happy New Years!!

2014-12-27 BecauseWeCanFarWestTavern

Dean Tanji, ever the one to to rub our wonderful weather into the frozen noses of our eastern Brothers once again posted they because we can ride event. For the second year in a row we met at the Far West Tavern in Orcut California.

I posted on the F JR forum to see if any local riders wanted to meet up then ride to the tavern. Supertanker and his pastor Rick Took me up on the offer, as did Mike, HCYLE.

Here we are munching and Dean T has just concluded the toast to the frozenites.

Rick and Chris from the FjrForum. Mike was running a little bit late so we left him to his own navigational skills to find eat point by himself. If you know Mike, did you know that Mike had no trouble finding the Far West Tavern.

Chris Purney on the left. The unknown fellow to the right is a Iron Butt rally newbie for 2015.

Here's Randy, dressed like Johnny Cash. He's on the FJR forum too. Can't recall his handle right now. But I do recall that he likes to crash very expensive motorcycles. :)

It was less of a turn out then from last year. Some of the bikes had already left by the time I took this photo.

Does anybody know who this is? He was at last year's ride to eat, and I think he does rallies.

Chris P's (eeksnake) honey.

I don't know who they are, but it was a father daughter riding team from the bay area, San Francisco California. The daughter was funny. I saw her standing by the bike all suited up, Helmet in hand while Dad conversed and conversed and conversed and conversed. Finally, enough time has gone by she had to go pee! When she came back from the restroom dad was still talking! He gave me a plastic enclosure to protect a Valentine radar detector. The timing was really good, as I am looking to buy a Valentine to replace my old escort 8500.

Well, that's it.Tony,I hope this proves the event really did happen. Many kudos to Mr. Tanji for putting this event on once again.
