I took my FJR in for the 36k mile service last Monday. I needed to get back home and needed a loaner. Roseville Yamaha was going to give me a demo Star Road Liner. I have 100 miles on one of those, and that's enough for me. I saw a big 'ol Harley Road Glide on their front entrance walk. I asked for it. I told Pete that it was highly likely that my neighbor would buy it if he saw it. Pete told me a really good price (about $6k under bluebook) and gave me a list of upgrades the bike had:

Screaming Eagle Cams

95 CI kit

Screaming Eagle computer

Vance&Hines 2 into 1 exhaust

Chopped travel package

Cruise

43mm carbs

All the stock parts that were replaced

Well, I hopped on and it was with anticipation that I awaited the sluggish stearing, braking, acceleration etc.

I was pretty nervous about turning it. I didn't want to scrape the thing in turns and I was so used to the FJR's leaning capabilities. I never scraped...phew. In fact, the steering was better than I thought it would be. It seemed slower to stear...or not to turn as much as I was leaning...but it was manageable and I never hit any stationary objects, or got out of my lane or anything.

I was nervous about braking. I tested it once and yep, it is heavier thant he FJR and has thinner harder tires. It doesn't stop as fast. It seemed okay.

I expected it to be really slow. It wasn't. It was actually a lot faster than I thought it would be. I think it was just as fast, or faster than the Star Road Liner (but it's been ahwile since I rode that).

I expected it to shake me up. At a stop and idle it did. I finally figured out why HD riders always rev their engines. It isn't to sound cool, it's so they can see in a single image because at idle while stopped you see double; one image 2 cm over the other.

At speed? This bike is smooth. The fixed fairing VERY good and had zero buffeting. I loved it at speed. The only problem I had at speed was the engine noise. It was too loud for me. I'd stick with the stock pipes.

Was I surprised? Yes! This bike was much better than I expected. I better understand why people buy them now. After riding LD on the FJR, I'm not even close to considering a swap, but the HD is a lot nicer than I thought it would be. It was comfortable, Reasonably fast, took cornering ok, great fairing, comfy, smooth at speed. The shaking at a stop was nearly unbearable and pretty embarassing to me...the handlebars were jumping up and down by 1.5 inches!!! I guess you'd get used to that.

Bottom line, I have more respect for the machine than I had before. I had fun...but go figure...I like something with two wheels...surprise!!!

Oh, and my neighbor bought it. CeeBaileys polish took they fading/yellowing off the headlight cover and indicator light lenses really nicely!

Hey now... we don't want to start a trend here, that is, positive stuff about Harley's.

I don't mean this as a hijack so much as to endorse Orangevale's report. Aside from the FJR, I also have a Sportster (which would make the Glide seem downright smooth). Once when I was out for a ride and stopped at an intersection, a guy in a truck pulls up next to me, gets my attention, points to my pipes, and yells that they were going to fall off. I yelled back, "Welcome to the world of Harley ... they throw in the vibration for free." He just shook his head in disgust and drove off. He almost seemed to blame ME for designing the bike! People are funny.

Harley's aren't bad if, after riding a few miles and then getting off the bike, you really dig jittering uncontrollably for the rest of the day!! :hyper:

Neighbor got the above for $12k OTD. Pretty decent considering blue book and the cost of those add ons.

I should correct one thing. I measured the double vision in centemeters rather than inches.

This is a great write up for me because I have been thinking about a roadglide for a long time and have been waiting for them to make the updates they finally have done, ie the 6 speed tranny, 96 ci, now optional abs with brembo brakes, fuel injection, 2 yr warranty. Especially after reading the writeup on the leg thrombosis issues I feel the rg would give me more room to stretch out and hopefully not have the health issues associated with long distance riding. I have been a harley basher for years so it is kind of comical for me to be writing this. I plan on rentlng a hd rg to see if I really like it because a new one is about 23k otd. Momma says we can't afford it even by selling all the bikes. Oh well fighting words that mean I must go do it. I will definitely play the health card since my lower legs are swollen with discoloring. The battle must go on and you might see a very well maintained 06A for sale soon. thanks Everett

I have test ridden most HD at bike shows (HD riding buddy) and I've always liked the Road Glide. If I had the $$ to have 4 or more bikes one would be a Road Glide.

I am an FJR owner who also has a 2002 HD. 2001 and up are very smooth. They have lot's of grunt up to 75-80 and corner reasonablly well. If course the FJR leaves it in the dust after 60 mph and disappears in corners. If you just want to cruise HD is an excellent bike. Drove a 2006 Fatboy through Germany and France with lots of switchbacks and 15% grades and it did very well behind the leader in his BMW.

Most Jap-bike owners (if they don't already own a Harley-clone) are just biding time to when they finally get 'their Harley'. ;)

I hear alot of the remainder of Jap-bike owners say, (something like) "I'd like to own a BMW before I get too old."

Don't hear too many lusting after UJMs -- I think they're either bought for convenience or practicality?
