2005 heat issue

With the heat that comes off the 2005 model I was thinking about a fix. If there is a supposed fix on the 2006 model and on, then is it possible to buy the OEM parts that accomplish the heat management and put those parts on a 2005 model or earlier? Would this accomplish the same purpose or is it not cost effective or even possible due to design? Is it Friday?

Now I'm actually interested in seeing what people really know about this. I've read in many different search results and other FJR sites for close to an hour on the whole heat thing. There were things talked about like different radiator plumbing routing and speculation but, now I want to actually know the difference.

Are the extensive changes cosmetic, tupperware, mechanical, or all of the above? Me be going to ye ol OEM fiche sites now to poke around before the lads come back with something. arrrr

All of the above. Completely different radiator. Completely different front subframe which means all plastic is different, as well as gauge cluster. Other parts, like coolant resevoir and Regulator/Rectifier moved. And all these parts inter-connect and each plays it's little role in heat mitigation.

Spot on as far as the radiator(mechanical parts). I didn't need to go any further after I looked at that.

When I went and looked at the parts I thought I may have to do some magnifying to see differences. Not at all, 2 different designs. Curved shapes and 2 fans compared to 1. I actually learned something out of my attempt at this tomfoolery. I may have to interact with my fellow riders more if you'll have me. The only bad thing is I added to the NEPRT section.

This is perhaps the most discussed topic on this and other FJR forums. You can do heat fixes to the Gen 1 bikes. I have done them and they do help. But you cannot duplicate the airflow changes made in the Gen 2 bikes. The cowlings are quite different.

When you are competely done with all the heat fixes (cromeit, blanket under tank etc), you will still have heat from the frame mostly near your left knee and thigh. To remedy that, there are two solutions: first, wear real gear to insulate your leg from heat (and the road rash when you crash.) Second, and easiest, angle your knees outward from the tank/frame to allow some airflow.

Yeah, I'm thinking about doing the comeit deal just for something to do in the garage. Then I may install it to see if it even makes a difference. That's as far as I'll go, I actually don't think it's bad. It's a large motor wrapped in a fairing and it's a motorcycle, I don't expect a car like ride.

As far as gear goes I used to ride in teknic pants but ,now it's just jeans. Yeah I'll probably complain if they get fused to my skin if I everwreck. After 22 years of riding and thank god, no contact with the pavement I just go with what I got. I do the whole jacket, boots, gloves, and full face helmet though. I may get some textile pants or something like them someday again.

Talking about letting the knees out for air, I call it the FJR heat whore wide open position. I'm used to doing it and feel like an ***** but, it works.

Just the "heat blanket" under the tank made mine a lot better. I also lined the plastic side covers that hold in the tank with some of the bubble/foil stuff (cost all of $ 1.90) I also put some under my seat for good measure. Tested during memorial weekend with a ride to san diego and back through the desert.

Also, search on "Baker Air Wings." I have a pair on my '05 hanging below Garauld's light brackets...Hella FF-50's on top. The air flow can be managed somewhat and, in my experience, seems to keep the tank cooler.

Yep! I added Baker "hand wings" to mine and they direct more air into the cockpit area.
