So I have a line on two bikes...

1 - 2005 with less than 10K miles, stock with Yami trunk, asking right around 7K - shop sale, will get a complete going-over, fluid change, possibly new tires, currently a sales demo bike, "immaculate"

2 - 2006 with less than 25k miles, stock no trunk, asking around 7K - as-is sits private sale, needs new tires, new battery will be provided by seller as it has not been started in over a year, one tip-over with minor scratches

I am inclined to the 2006, even thought on paper the 2005 seems the better deal. Both I can probably negotiate some on the price as I rarely, if ever, pay asking price.

Thoughts?

#1: A demo bike from '05? That sounds fishy to me, but of the two I sorta like this one better. If it doesn't have the ABS, I would pass though.

#2: Hasn't been started in a year? I wonder what Kind of fuel delivery problems this thing is gonna have.

Honestly, I don't know that I'd be too excited about either bike and would keep looking.

HotRod, to clarify the 2005 is being used as a salesmans bike right now, it belonged to an old guy and it say for two years before being sold!

Oh...Haha..That makes sense!

I'd go for the 2006. Nicer blue , and it's a Gen II. Just make sure all the recall updates have been done.

Not trying to say Gen II bikes are better than Gen I ....but they kinda are ;)

Let's assume that you'd negotiate the price to something that you are comfortable with, and so would end up paying the same price for the two bikes.

So it's just a case of which you'd rather have at whatever the price tag.

#1 "pros" It has 15k fewer miles, is a shop sale so has an implied warranty of merchantability and comes with a rear trunk, which (if you want one) is worth around $500. It's in great shape and is being regulaly ridden by a motorcycle professional.

The big "con" is that it isn't really past the point where it would have become a ticker (if it ever will).

#2 "pros": It is a second gen, so has improved air flow for cooling (if that matters a lot to you, it may in Georgia) and is one model year younger (for resale value).

Cons are it is in worse overall shape, has been recently neglected, has scratches from drop(s), and you'll be buying new tires for it on top of the price paid.

I'd buy #1 in a minute.

only IF an ABS model as that option can and will save your life...Georgia has lots of rain like Looziana

ABS was a $1000 option in '04 or '05 (not avail on '03)

all Gen II's it's standard...

and back on subject...No No No on the other one...the '06...too low running miles is worse than too many

geeze, in the for sale section are great deals...do a fly and ride for the ONE bike that calls your name

find a "stranger" owned bike and ask a local who is a forum member to go check it out

buyers remorse sucks peanut butter...

Both are too expensive. I got a mostly stock '06 with 43K miles in good shape for $5500 in Feb 2011. I also nearly got a 2005 ABS with 20K miles for $5K in December of 2010 and a 2004 ABS with 20K miles for $4500 (or less). All were in Texas.

Negotiate the price or wait. Avoid that scarcity mentality and get a deal.

Ford Boy: the prices you're quoting are among the best one can hope for. Most of us will have to pay a little more, especially this time of year.

Two wheel, Here's a thought: the extra warmth coming off the engine of the 05 can make big difference. A negative in July, but a positive in November: the heat actually feels nice in cooler temps. Gonna drive it year round? I assume the 05 has ABS because of the price. Can't imagine anyone asking that much for a non-ABS bike. All things considered, it seems to me you get a lot more for your money with the 05. If you plan to keep it for a long while, the value of the two bikes (due to age) will be negligible several years from now. Seems to me the 05 is the better bike for the money, assuming that the final purchase price for each will be about the same. Consider this: if you don't want the top trunk, they sell quickly on this forum. However, things like tires, scratches, and etc. add up in a hurry. Sounds like maybe the 06 is gonna cost a good bit more than the 05 when it's all said and done. One last thing: if ya do your own maintenance, the mileage difference isn't that big of a deal. If ya have it done at the shop, the 06 will cost ya some big bucks sooner. Guess the big question you face is the same one I did when I bought my 05 ABS with 4k miles - 14 months ago for 6500: how much does a little extra heat in the summer matter to ya?

Thanks everyone for your advice, I bit the bullet and purchased the '06 yesterday. I paid significantly less than the asking price and feel, scratches and the need for new rubber aside, I got a great deal on the bike. I also LOVE the freaking blue, man what a sexy arse bike!
