I have a 2006 electric shift model. When I start the bike the ABS light is on. I can shift from neutral to 1st just fine but when I shift into 2ond I get SH_32 on the display and the check engine light comes on and it will not shift into 3rd. After this happens the clutch will not engage and I just have to let the bike die when I stop. After stopping and turning the key off and back on I can start the bike and shift back to neutral. I have replaced the battery (since it was old anyway) with no change. I also checked the "back box" under the seat and the portion of the wire bundle (that I can see without taking the bike apart) and don't see any obvious problems. This seems to have happeded out of the blue as last time I rode everything was fine. I have googled the SH_32 code but haven't found any results secific to the 06 model. Any help would be appreciated, I don't have a lot of money to spend at the dealership having them track down the issue.

With an ABS light on there is a better chance that your problem is in one of the ABS wheel sensors than a problem with the YCCS system. You may want to start troubleshooting the ABS system first.

SH__32 - YCCS-Speed sensor signal is abnormal.

Connections: Wire harness MCU coupler, YCC-S Speed sensor coupler - Check coupler for any pins that may be pulled out. Check the locking condition of the coupler. If there is a malfunction, repair it and conneect the coupler securely.

Open or short circuit in wire harness - Repair or replace if there is an open or short circuit. Between YCC-S speed sensor coupler and MCU coupler

Defective YCC-S speed sensor - Replace if defective.

All from page 8-192 of the factory service manual.

Check speed sensor on page 8-234.

Is it really the ABS light or the amber one above the clock?

The manual's description says "YCC-S speed sensor signal does not match multi-function meter vehicle speed". Which makes no immediate sense since it's the ABS speed sensor that is used for the vehicle's speed.

I strongly suspect this is really saying the clutch input and output speeds are not what is expected. In other words, either the clutch not disengaging as it should during the gear-change sequence from the change from 1st to 2nd, or clutch slip in the new gear.

Aha, well there we go.

Since the ABS light is on and it is part of the vehicle speed sensing and it's the most accessible and easiest part to check I thought that it may be the simplest and highly likely place to start. Please feel free to check items in the sequence listed in post 3 and check the clutch engagement in post 6 first, gixxerjason and mcatrophy are AE owners and therefore know the YCCS system intimately (really, these guys know their stuff). All the items mentioned are all related to SH_32 and any one could be the root cause of the problem.

I'll post no more here.

My ABS light came on with no SH_fault on the dash. It was annoying. I disconnected the battery for a completely different issue and when I connected it back up the light went out and stayed out. I also in the past have had the clutch not disengage at a rolling stop. It turned out to be the idle was a wee bit too high. Brought it down to 1,100rpm and all has been fine.

Not saying I know anything about the SH__32 error, never had that one myself thankfully (looks for wood to knock on)

My stuff was typed straight from the Factory Service Manual is all, just passing on info. Buying my legit factory service manual was one of the best purchases for my bike I've made. Being able to flip it open and know what that crazy error code means takes a lot of the mystery out of it.

I had given mine away just a few weeks before I ended up acquiring two FJR AEs recently (an '08 and an '09).

I had also given the same guy an oil filter and three crush washers.

When I got more FJRs, he asked if I wanted these items back (I'd also sent him a bunch of stuff for another bike ), and I told him no. In fact, I told him I'd already bought an oil filter and crush washers, so no worries and he should keep the items as a gift.

Imagine my surprise on Thursday when a care package arrived and he'd sent back the service manual, filter and crush washers.

So that was a nice gesture, and unnecessary, but appreciated.

I'm glad my gift to him had included mostly stuff for a different bike that I will never reacquire so that he didn't feel like he should return the whole gift.

Sigh...

As soon as I got home on Thursday, I opened the manual and started reading. It's better than most novels. As they say,

Thanks for all the great advice and info from the service manual. While inspecting the MCU and wiring harness I found that mice had setup shop there and had chewed the insulation off several of the wires. Hopefully fixing the damage will cure the shifting issue.

Good (bad?) find. Hope there's no permanent damage. Invest in a cat ...
