2007 With Low Miles Question

Just noticed a local dealer has a 2007 model with 3900 miles. I bought a bike once with real low miles and ending up spending a lot of money on it to get it right. Seems it had been sitting up for a long time. Just wondering what ya'll think? I hope to get to take a look at it in the next few days and get more info. BTW, I no longer have the 2005 on my avatar.

Will they allow you a test drive? That would be the first thing I'd want to do. Verify that all recalls are done and ask for a service history. Try to find out the back story on the bike. How long it's been sitting. I wouldn't let the low miles be the only factor.YMMV

Is it an AE? (Does it have a clutch lever?) The AE models tend to take longer to find the right rider. If the bike has had the instantaneous mileage recall done the Meter Assembly is replaced which resets the mileage to 000000. The dealer is supposed to put a note in the back of the owners manual and a sticker on the bottom of the glove box lid when the Meter Assembly is replaced. When you give a Yamaha service department the VIN to look up recalls they can tell you if the Meter was replaced.

Expect 8 year old tires will need to be changed. Plan to run some fuel system cleaner through the tank for the first few fills. Look in the tank for rust -- hint, use a flashlight and not a lighter for illumination

Just back from checking out the bike. Looks like new, just a couple of scuffs on one saddle bag. Dealer sold the bike new to the owner. He is 70 and no longer riding so its been sitting up a while. It's been serviced and all fluids changed. Did notice some rust on the filler neck though and that concerns me. Didn't get a test ride. Think I'll let it sit on the showroom and go back later and see if they will come off the price anymore. $6500 plus tax.

That seems like a pretty good price, depending on what farkles might have been added: windscreen, seat, heated grips, top box, bar risers...

Should be able to pick it up for $5500ish maybe a little lower if it's stock. Nothing to worry about on the 07's other than an ECU recall and grounding harness recall, no biggies really. Check and see if they were done. I'd pay them 6K to get it under you.

I wouldnt worry with the mileage as long as it runs good. I would try to get them down on the price though.

Scuffs on the bag? You'll do that yourself before you've ridden her 1,000 miles. And that bike has AT LEAST 100,000 miles in her.

If you decide to buy the bike, you should ask the dealer to remove the tank and ensure there is no rust and sludge in the tank. Rust around the top of the filler tube is not a big deal. That is from the condensation that forms during temperature fluctuations.

Agree with Art on the fuel tank rust. Also, there was an altitude issue with ''07 ECU's, basically fuel system sickness at altitude. It was a service bulletin not a recall..... it would be worth having the newer ECU.

I just bought an 04 with 7500 miles. It too has the rust in the filler neck and in fact the gas lock was VERY stuck and I bent the key trying to get it open. Other than that the bike is mint. I would assume a dealer would do a minor service, oil and filter and possibly go through the whole bike, brake fluids, shaft, and whatever "100 pt" inspection they do. I have had more yamahas than I can count and they are very well built bikes, I would not worry about the nuts and bolts of the bike. If its what you want try to make a deal for yourself. I would think $5500 would be doable and its a helluva a lot of bike for that price. I know there "improvements" to the bike over the years, but its fundamentally the same bike and will do most of what the newer bikes do for a fraction of the entry fee. I am very happy with mine.

I'm not sure on the Gen I bikes, but the Ilco YM63 key from the hardware store is MUCH stronger than the flimsy factory aluminum foil keys.

I would definitely insist on a test ride regardless of mileage, appearance, whatever. Buying a vehicle without a test drive can be a huge gamble. There is an '07 at a dealership near my house a friend was looking at. I left him ride mine first so he had a baseline to compare against. Dealership bike turned out to have bent shift forks and bike popped out of second gear under acceleration. While not a super common issue it does happen. Friend passed and ended up buying a used one from a forum member.

Rust at top of filler neck as stated is not huge problem. Seen it on other bikes as well. Price should be negotiable especially at this time of year.

I bought a 2007 in February of this year with 5000 miles,changed all of the fluids and filters,installed a new battery and tires and had a couple of recalls done at local dealer.

Now has 12000 miles on the odometer and never missed a beat.
