My 1st Time Feejer Thread

From stop, when I use the finger lever or the foot lever and engage 1st gear, i hear and feel a 'thud' or 'clunk'.

Seems to be a little loud and 'hard'

Is this normal?

Normal for any FJR.

Unless it's excessive.

Best if you can find someone with another FJR to compare.

I always put my rear brake on hard when selecting 1st from neutral to prevent any movement.

A slight clunk is normal, unless I hear yours it's hard to tell if it's normal, I put about 1/2 bottle of STP oil treatment in the oil and it shifts smoother, when was the last time you flushed your clutch fluid.

Me? Never.

Just got this bike delivered to me last Monday and it has done all of 1620 miles! So probably clutch fluid not be flushed at all!

I'll have to ask my mechanic to flush my clutch fluid... oh wait, I service my own bike... better grab the manual for that one. (lol)

I would flush the brakes also, if your going to do it yourself you will need a Miti Vac for the clutch fluid, try adding some STP oil treatment.

My AE does a louder shift from neutral to first the first time, when its cold, but not thereafter. I understand that is normal. If yours is making a noisier shift every time you may have a problem.

Some people report rough shifting on the AE's if you use a synthetic oil. Don't know if its true, but I've avoided the synthetics.

Good luck!

Yes, STP in the oil, not clutch.

Not an option on the AE, but mine doesn't clunk into first because I pull the cluch lever in and rev the engine before dropping it into gear. This action frees up the sticky cluch plates that cause the clunk. If I don't use my usual method, then I also get the clunk.

I wonder if you can start an AE in gear?
If you mean a push start, totally impossible. I always carry jump leads when away overnight (but so far have never needed to use them).
If you mean using the starter motor, yes, no problem.
