2009 R1 might not be the prettiest looking bike, but

To me, a better solution is the one taken by BMW automobiles for all these years. Build inline 6 cylinder engines.
Ah, like the medium-sized one (4.6L) in my Land Cruiser, or the 515 horse model in my newest toy:

As far as looks are concerned, you only have to look at them for about a half second. Unless they're in the parking lot, they remove themselves from view pretty quickly.

The primary reason cranks haven't been built this way in the past is simple: Expense. It's easier and cheaper to forge an old style 'flat' crank than it is to forge a crank with journals 90 degrees from one another. Inline 4s have always been done on the cheap.

One of the minor, and often unstated reasons for the firing order is many racers' perception that the 'dead time' interval allows the tire to hook back up a bit when exiting a corner. Closely timed power is then applied to move downtrack. So it's 'hook up' then 'slide' for every 720 degrees of rotation instead of 'hookup' then 'moderate power' like a standard crank layout. Yeah, they claim ability to use this 'timing' and feel at 14K rpm..... 7000 times a second. I think it's a lot more complicated than that, because power is always damped by the drivetrain. But that's one of the claims.

I like its looks, although the front turn signals look like an afterthought. It seems they could have been blended onto the fairing instead of placed on stalks. Minor point, I know.

The titanium color of the bike in the picture with the leggy model isn't shown as an option on Yamaha's website.

The new R1 landed here about three weeks ago. But for 7000 USD more than the 08 it is not a seller. Peeps are checking them out but not buying!

Wanted to sell my 06 R1 for the new one, but not now. Economy and the exchange rate bit us in the ***......GRRRRR.
