Ok - since we are in speculation mode - I'm going to double down a on my earlier bet that there will be something huge for getting all 48 capitals.

The guys that passed up Fargo or other northern capitals that were very little points may have to go back and get it them now?

This is riveting. And tragic.
If there is in fact a 48 capitals bonus those who went to Fargo are going to be UBER-PISSED. Just sayin' (born and raised up nort, eh)

That said, I also like the 48 capitals ride, I mapped it out several (20?) pages ago. It gives the rider the chance to adjust to anything crazy on leg 3 while planning 11 days of riding. You have maximized points and rest for the first two legs and now you can see just how spunky you really feel on leg 3.

I'm with Scooter G on this one, my only reservation on the 48 capitals ride is that it doesn't strike me as being in the spirit of the IBR. Nothing but big miles on the interstate even though that is consistent with the hints we have been getting. A big time curve on leg 3 can fix all that.

I like the all capitals in play on the last leg idea-it would give them a way to issue the all 48 bonus on leg three. I would assume most everybody got most of the capitals in leg 2, at least the hard to reach NE ones. That would open up a huge miles, all out western capital free for all on leg three. Interesting but it doesn't really bring us back to even with the Hyder guys.

Wanting to finish well with a chance at the podium, I'd be trying for the all 48 capitals from the beginning.

That would, in this Rally, put you in a group of one :)

Well .... at least in the top 30 after the first Leg .... No one got all 19 States in play.

 
Sparky and Pebbles, our intrepid iReporters, said they may stick around for the 10:00 PM departure so I'll post those pics when I get them. But probably tomorrow so as not to be guilty of PUI :D :D

Meanwhile, I think heat may be a deciding factor in Leg 3. It was 100 here in Hootin' today so I thought I'd check around.

If it was pulled off on the first leg it would have been in 4th place with 5422 points. I'm also not not necessarily running for the win, just a good showing...you know, for my first armchair IBR and all.

Something else just hit me though. If higher points for capitals are based on distance from the direct route then why are ND and NE both 25ish points? Add to the that MN and IA being the same range there is not much reason to get those capitals in round one. I didn't see them on alot of scorecards for obvious reasons. What if they were worth mega points on leg 3? It seems like ND, MN, and IA would be right in line with a direct route but the point values dictate the route to be more southern.

I see I was beaten to the punch on a Washington DC possibility.

I haven't been able to run the numbers but it is the only Capitol and "state" not to come up yet and would be in the theme.

It is also classic IBR tactic to have riders backtrack for big points.

Correct, hence the rules against posting/facebooking/tweeting/etc during the 11-day event.

But I did get a report from a FJR1300 rider at Checkpoint Two, which I paraphrase here:

Just a _very_ quick note. Thought you might like some info for the forums on my status.

Its 6pm in Jacksonville. Slept all I can sleep. Will try some more after this. I _am_ as well rested as I can manage at the moment. Doing well physically but still dealing with some niggling little issues that are about what I expected.

Leg 1 sucked **** for me. Bad routing decision early on (will explain later) and attempted to correct on fly while dealing with the first 5 days of the IBR. Felt very overwhelmed and out of sorts.

Last 2 days of leg 1 got some focus and finally got myself into a much needed rhythm. Started feeling and riding better.

Leg 2 I was treating as the "get my *** to FL" leg. Which I did. States only (points for caps on leg 2 were tiny).

Have a hunch Leg 3 capitols will have big points. 'Specially the out of the way ones like Salt Lake, Reno and Sacramento (Just a guess at the moment!)

I've got a good baseroute for Leg3 already planned to get the remaining states. I have actually already bagged a couple extra states (CO and TN) making the baseroute a bit easier for me on this leg.

Can I get a Jim Frens update? Sure wish I had his Spot to track form Japan...
john, he made it in and is doing the score/sleep/resting/prep for next leg. in about an hour or so youll see the movement again by many. jim didnt give out his spot to too many folks. shoot heidi a note.

butt then again, youre what ~12 hours ahead of us so why arent you telling us what going on!

I'm with you. The whole point of a drive-shaft on a MC, to me, is the reduced maintenance and avoiding the chain lube hassle. Having to replace a FD, or parts of it, is going in the wrong direction and I'd rather adjust a chain and address its lube issues than this.

If it were one or two, I'd understand, but when it's this well known, why isn't BMW's FD issue fixed? I'm pretty sure they CAN fix it. Why haven't they?? :huh:

 
I suspect some of the FD changes are precautionary mixed with a small dose of paranoia (which may be inferred or more appropriately described as informed skepticism).

Ya know, just sayin'....
