I don't see how they would care, it's not a safety issue. It's not my business where people choose to participate on the internet, I'm sure they already know about the forums and groups out there.

I'm just letting you guys know what's going on.

So, the short answer is, "No."

Thank you.

But, I remind that the basic purpose of this forum is broader than you seem to think.

This forum is to discuss the Yamaha FJR1300 and the issues surrounding the FJR1300 community.
This issue certainly qualifies. You can certainly adopt the information embargo approach if you want, but it just seems weird.

So, have you encouraged those three people to sign up on this forum to share technical details and/or register a complaint with NHTSA?
The sunburned information display isn't a safety issue so I don't think the NHTSA can do anything for us. If the speedometer couldn't be read or critical indicators like brake failures there may be a reason to file with the NHTSA.

Fair enough and good point on the second part. The OP has made it clear he prefers to go on the stingy side for the first part. ;)

I don't see why one wouldn't want to encourage other FJR owners to join this forum if they didn't already know...

What's one got to lose?

On this issue I will disagree with the OP. I always ALWAYS ask FJR owners that I meet if they are forum members. I do the same for the ST1300 guys I run across. I encourage them to at least take a look at the forums. You never know when that guy may need us or we might need him/her.

...But I just checked and the part number for the meter assembly is different for the 2014 ES than for the 2013 and 2104 A models. There is a possibility that the darkening LCDs are limited to the ES models, or as ionbeam mentioned, some subset of the ES models...
Probably simply a firmware difference because of the ES features that need controlling.

I would guess that my AS (includes YCC_S and ES) is different again.

Of course, it's always possible that different batches were given the different firmware.
I'll admit that I'm not technically knowledgeable (and I haven't even read that nice techie page that Fred linked earlier) but I suspect that there's an actual hardware difference. Don't LCD screens have shaped "moulds" that the crystals fill when given their electric marching orders? Isn't that why the classic LCD digital display has those 7-segment block numerals? I know the ES displays have icons that don't exist on the 2013 dash (e.g. helmets indicating 1-up vs. 2-up, etc.). Isn't it likely that it's a different piece of hardware used on the 2 bikes?

The LDC panel is a sandwich made of ~6 layers -- a front panel that is a vertical polarizer; a glass plate with electrodes that determine the displayed shapes; liquid crystals; glass plate with a common film electrode; horizontal polarizer and either a reflector or back light panel to bounce light back at the viewer.

When the electrodes are powered the resulting heat causes the liquid crystals to change twisting phase and alter the light that can pass through the two polarizers. When extreme heat affects the liquid crystals the display will turn black because the liquid crystals can't twist normally. The display blacking out is from sun derived heat; heat is the only component from sunlight that can affect the display.

The display shouldn't be affected by ambient heat but obviously some displays are. VIN probably won't be a good indicator of what FJRs have this problem unless Yamaha has carefully maintained part traceability.

Regardless of what mechanism causes the issue, your FJR is still under warranty and the dealer should fix your bike. Since the display isn't a normal replacement item the parts may have to come from Japan. Same deal as needing a stock stator or ECU.

All LCDs are affected by heat to one degree or another. That was the point of the article that I linked to earlier.

"Ambient" is a completely relative term. What is ambient in New England is not ambient in Florida or Arizona. And the temperature of that display when left in the direct (Florida) sun for hours, with the heat being captured by the outer clear bezel of the display, will be considerably higher than any ambient.

"Affected" is also a key concept here. Temporarily blacking out and then fully recovering is a lot different than experiencing permanent damage or malfunction. This is not an unheard of phenomenon. It happens on other devices (including motorcycles) when subjected to extreme situations of sun induced heat. I still don't see what all the churn is about here. Yes, I would be interested to know what the extent of this phenomenon is, but beyond that who really cares.

If my bike happens to be one that will do that, and I have no reason to doubt that it is, I'll just cover the gauges when I park it in the sun and be done with it. The sky is not falling.

Ya, we have pretty much covered it all more than once. The OP is on the verge of going pgrhodes1 on us because we haven't watched the video enough to understand the problem so I'm outta here.

Jebus. I just found this stinky turd of a thread. Wish I hadn't. FYI: I could not bring myself to actually read the last two pages so I don't know what I might have missed.

Words from The All Knowing and Powerful SkooterG:

In the last two years I have been around a fair share of 2013 and 2014 FJRs. I have never seen a 2013 exhibit this phenomena. I have seen one 2014 do it. It wasn't too long ago but I can't remember where. It was fine in the (cooler) morning, but when I went to ride it in the (warmer) afternoon I was like WTF!? Ain't never seen this before. After riding it a short distance (and it cooling) it went away so it fell off my radar.

If it was my personal bike I wouldn't be freaked out since it will go away, but I would try to get it fixed at Yamaha's expense since it shouldn't be happening under 'normal' conditions.

There. Words to live by!

Well, it should be your personal bike. When are you buying that 3rd Gen ES? You have the inside line on a great price... you are single with no kids... WTF are you waiting for Greg? (I guess it will be FJR #6)

And when you do, don't be screwing it up by putting one of those damn car tires on there.

Ahhhhh..... good things come to those who wait. Or some such ********. And an ES would totally *rock* a car tire!

And it might just be FJR#7.......

Single AND no kids?!?!
I HATE YOU EVEN MORE!!!
I could not hate him any more if I tried.

I know you guys are kidding. At least I hope so. I will admit that 'single' sounds good sometimes but most of the time I am glad to be married rather than out there working the dating scene, and I'll never wish away my kids.

Back to the LCD, maybe I missed the information among all of the other stuff, but what has Yamaha said about the problem? Did they replace the part under warranty?
