The slipper clutch is going to make Hans (James Burleigh) really happy. He is an animal on clutches in his Bay Area commute.

 
Kind of like the owners of current and older models saying that all of these improvements are worthless. Like you said, just human nature to defend what you've got.

 
Slipper clutches are also safer if you aggressively downshift to slow down more quickly before hitting the brakes in the rain or on wet roads.

 
Maybe the slipper clutch is in anticipation of the 190 hp version of the mill which will be available as a factory upgrade in 2017.

For me, I couldn't care less about the slipper clutch per se, but I was ecstatic when I saw the 20% lighter pull due to the assist. If it takes a slipper clutch to get this force reduction, I'm in.

 
I like slipper clutches, I do a lot of riding in mountain canyons, it works great in that environment. I want all my bikes to have slipper clutches.

 
Just thinking again about the numbers...... so if 3000 were sold, that's an average of about 60 per state, and since the red ones are easy to spot, they should be all over the place, especially in the more populated centers where the higher than average number are sold...... hmmmmm.

My previous steed...a 1984 Honda V65 Magna, was equipped with a slipper clutch. Given the power of the bike and the lighter weight, I could see why Honda added it. I've certainly never missed it since moving to the FJR.

...but Tom, JB wears them out in "normal" (for him) riding. Pretty sure he's a special case!

Although I've never slid the rear tire on compression braking, finding a slippery spot on corner entry just once will make one thankful for a slipper clutch.

First: Just because 3000 or more are sold does not mean 3000 or more are ridden. That's how we end up with low mileage bikes 2 or 3 years down the road. If Yamaha wasn't selling these, they'd stop making them.

Second: On that same note regarding pirates and FJRs, there are bike owners and bike riders. Some don't want to ride fast, some just want to bar hop, some (many) don't want to burn through twisties, most don't want to do LD rides, some just want to say they own a motorcycle, and a pretty, shiny cruiser is a good conversation piece. I do not care how many pirates decide to ride different bikes. Their current POS configurations make them easy to pass, and most of them are too stupid to ride anything but a tractor anyway.

Three: Maybe Yamaha is not selling enough rear brake pads, so went with the slipper clutch to help that. I have no idea, because I don't know what effect it will have on handling. I really like my current engine braking, but have also broken a rear tire lose a couple times. No biggie, I know how to ride and can control it, and was mostly ******* around, so that never really bothered me. If someone NEEDS a slipper clutch to keep from locking it up and crashing in the rain, their lack of skills elsewhere will crash them anyway...Oh well.

When they come out, I really want to ride one. Maybe it will be awesome, but in reality, my '07 is pretty awesome as is, and having zero payments makes it even more so. Seems like Yamaha has been working to make them better, not worse, so hopefully the new transmission, clutch, lights, and whatever else accomplish that.

It's from 2007 but it's still funny.

 
Slipper clutches.. are freaking awesome 90% of the time. But like ABS, it would be great to have the 'off' switch. Like when I purposely want to back the big old phat gurl into the corner with the very early downshift then power out leaving a big ****** until the rev limiter kicks in. Which reminds me, I need a rev limiter defeat switch too. I realize most of the peeps here have never purposely broken traction with a downshift; but it is FUN when done right. Of course, the downside is huge. And to be honest, it's been over a year now since I've played that hard with the big phat gurl.

Of all the models, the 2016 has my attention. Enough so that I might just consider selling my recently purchased 13 and the 06 to help finance. My bet is MamaYama is hoping peeps like me do just that; open the wallet and buy new.

Same here, love my '14ES, in fact it's my second one. Put 17k on the first one and now at 18k on the second one. But, I'm very curious about the '16 and the changes. Kind of wondering about the higher first and second gear, that might be a deal killer but I'll wait and see. Love my red but the Cobalt blue is gorgeous too. Come on March.

 
Unlike most other years, the big changes for this model year (6 speed and clutch) are ones that we really are going to need to ride and feel to know if we like them or not. March release is three months away and the anticipation is already palpable...

Yeah... Yamaha marketing doesn't know what they are doing.

So maybe going to the helical gears was a way to reduce the individual gear width without sacrificing strength, and allowed them to stuff the 6 speed into the same space as the old 5 speed?

Helical gears have better contact ratios, and this allows for thinner gears without exceeding the fatigue limits of the teeth. The teeth are loaded in one way bending, so their endurance limit is higher than it would be if you were running in both forward and reverse, but it is still generally the limiting factor in the gear's ultimate thickness. The diameters, of course, are driven by the need for specific target ratios.
