Just before leaving JTNP I stopped for a short hike to Cottonwood Spring. This place is like a mini jungle in the middle of the desert. Tons of bugs and birds.

As soon as I left the south side of JTNP I crossed I-10 and rode into Box Canyon, near Mecca, CA.

CONTINUED.

After leaving Box Canyon and traveling through Mecca, I headed south on S86 along the south / west shore of the Salton Sea. Sorry, no pictures of the Salton Sea this time. I then turned west onto S22 and headed through the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

Shortly after leaving the State Park I passed through Borrego Springs. Nice little town. It was then onto S2 in San Diego County where I had an unplanned rest stop. Officer Peterson was very nice, but I wasn't really in the mood to hang out with him. Fortunately he didn't detain me very long (CHP officers must be very busy). Does anyone know how much a violation of California Vehicle Code 22349 will cost me for 84 in a 55? Yuck.

CONTINUED.

Once my encounter w/ CHP was wrapped up I got onto hwy 79 and headed through Warner Springs. Around Warner Springs I passed near the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation and spotted this sign. I quickly came to a stop to capture this sign. Can you guess who I thought of when I saw this??

Overall it was a good ride. That ticket sucks, but the ride was fun anyway.

You can see all of the day's pictures at my web site:

Watch out for CHP on San Diego County S2

Nice ride and photos! Thanks! But that ticket's gonna sting! So will the insurance bump. Sorry 'bout that chief!

Depends on the judge and weather you appear. In term of money just a guess around 175.00. How about school to keep it off your record so insurance does not go up??

I have a clean DMV record, so I'll be able to do the driving school to keep the points off of my record (thus avoiding the increased insurance rates). The ****** thing is that the driving school thing will cause those points to be "suspended" for 12 months. That means that any moving violation within the next year will cause the suspended points to be "un-suspended". That means a year of driving like a sane person ALL THE TIME. I have my very first rally coming up...who wants to drive the speed limit during a rally?

My last speeding ticket, 94 in a 65 cost me $450 plus trafficschool.com.

2004 January Chatsworth, CA

Hope yours is less. But thank the Eternal Creator for www.trafficschoolonline.com!

I live in the Hemet area, and have ridden that loop several times. Let me tell you something, see if you felt the same way. After riding south through Joshua Tree park, and through Box Canyon, the dominant color is brown. You come out of the canyon, top out over a rise, and see all the green fields around Mecca. Doesn't the green look spectacular after all those miles of brown? Another good loop in our area- 79 south of Julian to S1. Thats the Sunrise hwy. It goes through Mt. Laguna, and swings back to 79 right above the 8. Run old hwy 80 alongside the 8 to the beginning(end) of S2, back north. Thats the old Overland Stage route. It will come out at the Scissors crossing est of Julian. You can then go back home through Borrego Springs(more slowly this time), or back up through Warner Springs to 371. North on 371 to 74(stop at the Paradise for lunch), and then run the 74 back down to DHS. Long day, but almost all two lane road

all the way. See you out there some time.

Ride safe.

GunMD - is that a state thing or a county rule. Never heard of that!

I think any vehicle that gets +35mpg should be exempt tickets.

I passed through Warner Springs today, on my way up to Palomar for some veggie food at Mothers Kitchen.

Look forward to meeting you at Spank

That's a state law. Sucks. I could stand to do some homework on that to be sure I've got it right. I recall this from the last ticket I got 'bout 4 years ago.

UPDATE: Upon Google searching and reading more than I cared to know about California Vehicle Codes, I can't find anything to back up my idea that traffic school completion would suspend the points rather than eliminating them altogether. I did find that you're only eligible for traffic school if you've had no other moving violations within the last 18 months.

Does anyone have any further info???

Looks like a fun ride, except for the CHP. Never went farther than the Stumps when I was stationed there many moons ago with my almost new '65 Honda CB77 Super Hawk! Think you can cover those miles a wee bit quicker than I could, especially the climb up 62 from the lo desert. 305 screeeminn ccs were hard pressed to "fly" up those grades! Ride safe........DFO

Interesting trivia bit. I think it's the Salton Sea that my cousin was the head honcho for a team of researches looking into it's "death". Each year it gets more "salty" and is dying like the Dead Sea did. The research is intended to detail the process perhaps with an eye toward how to reverse it or how to prevent it elsewhere.

Interesting trivia bit.
The Salton Sea is actually a man made mistake. A retaining wall along the Colorado river broke and filled the desert basin. It is one of the few man made features visible from space! Because it was caused by an accidental breech there is no natural way to keep the 'Sea' replenished with water so it is gradually evaporating away which concentrates the saline water. Regional birds have made the Salton Sea a new home and the dropping water along with the increasing salt is really hurting the wild life.

my cousin was the head honcho for a team of researches
I hope they find a good solution!
