Now you guys have got me worried. I've got an '06 with the BT020s and I plan on riding out to Russell in northern CA, up to Hyder and the home to Mpls. Round trip about 6,000 miles. Right now I stand at 520 miles and I leave on May 19th. If I get them pumped up to 42 psi and behave myself will these last??
I vote no way. Have a tire change scheduled in route. A dealer will be hapy to get you in and out fast if they hear your story.

Interesting. I vote "no problem" as long as you take it easy on hamfisted acceleration and engine breaking. Seriously, most should be able to get 8000 miles out of rear, more for the front, with "normal conservative" use.

I have never really gotten less than 10,000 miles out of a rear, and up to 12,750 on one. Fronts last 12,000 - 18,000 miles.

Ride your FJR like a touring bike, and you will get pro-longed tire wear. Ride it like a sport bike, and you eat those babies up in no time.

WERD...

I ride aggressive all the time with tons of engine braking, And i get about 5k out of the rear avons. Worth every penny to me though! :yahoo:

most of my stuff is on the hwy. got 7k on the stones and it looks like its going to be the around the same on the pilot roads

I got 10,745 miles out of the OEM Bridgestone BT-020's on my '04 FJR. Both front and rear tires hit the wear bars at about the same time. The front tire was fairly badly cupped when replaced. Tires were maintained at 42/42 psi. Replaced with Avons, which were just replaced again last week with another set of Avons after hitting the 14,000 mile point. The Avons were also run at 42/42 psi. The front Avon was only mildly cupped when replaced, both front and rear tires hit the wear bars at about the same time. I never had the slightest deceleration wobble/shimmy with either the BT-020's or Avons.

Lotsa factors determine tire wear and mileage: tire pressures, road surfaces, speed, load (solo or two up). IMHO, throttle control and smoothness is a MAJOR factor, constant whacking of the throttle will significantly reduce tire wear. You can ride quite aggressively but with smooth throttle transitions and control and still get good tire mileage. But if you enjoy whacking the throttle frequently, just expect to get less tire mileage. My son and I both have GSXR's also and get signficantly less tire mileage out of the Avons on the Gixxers than I get on the FJR. But we ride the Gixxers much more aggressively. As much as I love my FJR for the purpose it's intended for, there's no comparison between the FJR and a full fledged sportbike like the Gixxer.

Man, You must ride real passive (harley type) on the FJR and make up for it with the gixxer! The FJR is as close to a sportbike as i really want to go and be comforable as well. It does better than you give it credit! :)

I got 3500 miles on the original se t of Stones and 4000 out of the second set,and I was a fairly new rider to motorcycling. Of course my first trip was with liquidsilver. I learned alot that first weekend LOL

TWN reference to liquidsilver reminds me: He also put on Avons that lasted him 4500 miles I think, so thats a reference point vs his 020 lasting 2500.

Glenn

I wouldn't think the 020's will last across the country and back.

Tire pressures & wrist control.....ya right, you bought an FJR....to mosey down the back roads with the other junk that doesn't handle or go fast (like anyone is going to believe that) ....oh ya.....I've got some nice land in Florida for sale....& a building in New York....
Hey MIKE!

I already bought that land in Florida...but could you show me the building in NY?

:)

RR

ronjrieth....not a problem....do you want to meet me @ WFO to sign the deal? ;) the building is in really good shape except for some gorilla poo on the sides :) ....financing won't be a problem....I'll carry it personally :)

Thanks for all the replies. Most of the trip will be slab and major highways so it won't be real hard on the tires. It looks like I'll be safe if I behave and keep the tire pressures up. B)

yep the eom Bstones were gone in 3500 miles ,, my Stradas which were just changed today at 14000 miles were toast ,, new Stradas feel so gooood !!

and low pressure should ,, as Thug said ,, make it handle like a pig ,, although I never rode a pig that I can remember ,, well ,, maybe in my youth !!!

I got a little over 3000 miles on mine when the rear tire needed replacement. Most of the time I'm riding on winding asfault that may scrub off more rubber than on concrete freeways.

Bill :yahoo:

Got the second set of Bridgebones off yesterday and put on my second set of Avons. 3500 miles. Rear was toast and oddly cupped on the outside of the tread. Front was cupped medium, and could have got another 2-3k out of the front if I wanted to. Glad I did not! It is good to be back on the Avons. Smoother, faster into the turn, just feel better to me and last twice as long.

Why not plan on replacing the tire someplace on the trip, it's all part of the adventure. The size is common enough that most motorcycle dealers will have one. It may not be the "brand" you want, but finding a tire shouldn't be that hard. If you don't replace it, you'll be ahead of the game.

IF you ride like Lee says, spirited and fast, just not "sportbike hard" (Read: roll on the throttle, not "twist and shout"), you will probably be fine.
