My normal hyway cruising speed, dictated by draconian Canadian traffic laws, is just under 120kph (70MPH) and at that speed a gen1 in top gear is running at 4000rpm. Things are just about perfect at 4 grand as she will pass traffic on roll on and a brisker pass is just a prod of the gear lever away. Trouble is at 4000 she is just starting to make great gobs of power and on a long run I find my self having to constantly scan my guages to monitor my speed. The slightest throttle movement brings the revs up to 4500 and the real chance of a ticket or even worse 5000 and a suspension. These speeds are not the problem in themselves it`s the fact that it makes no difference to the bike whether she is at four or five thousand and if she is not kept in check she will have me staring down a radar at 140 rather than the more acceptable 120. I`ve tried to explain this to the cops without success but I`m sure you lot understand.

Agreed, these bikes easily transition from LEO glance to performance award speeds w/o much input.

I suggest a throttle lock if you're mostly in flat country, true cruise control if not.

Alternatively, CAJW figured out a radar detector will work while concealed in the glove box, you just need to figure out where to place your display so the LEOs don't recognize what the lights are for. Check the third page for detector in a box results:

Ya, the big girl likes to run and she's sneaky about it too.

Especially on the run between Chemmy and Sudbury.. some posted road speeds are just WAY TO SLOW. Just watch out for the tar strips by Murray Mine.. I think it would've been easier if they just covered the entire road instead of whats there now.

Plug, please do not put your radar detector in the glove box unless you live in a Provence where radar detectors are legal. The police and Mounties often have and use radar detector -- detectors. As in, the police sniff out your radar detector with a special device made to do just that. Some radar detectors claim to be invisible to RDDs but this isn't always the case. There are just plain over optimistic sales pitches and there is the case where some radar detectors operate at one frequency and the RDD can only sniff the other common frequency. These days some RDDs can sniff both frequencies. It is a BIG gamble if your radar detector really is invisible to the RDD the police/Mounties use.

When radar detectors were illegal in Connecticut I rode in my brother's cruiser with his RDD on. When he got a blip on his RDD he would toggle his radar gun and watch for brake lights. The guy that flashed his brake lights was the guy with the illegal radar detector  My brother would then pull along side the offending car and get the driver's attention and then blip his radar gun again. It didn't take the drivers long to get what he was saying. He never pulled over of ticketed anyone unless there was something else really wrong.

I push this 20 km over all the time, but I think radar detectors just encourage you to speed more.... take the back roads, etc. But I think you're really saying it's hard to hold a constant speed at 4000+ RPM. Oh darn, a real sport touring bike with horsepower... Back off the throttle spring for better control, and get a cruise control device is all I got for you.

Say Ray, help this old Arizona Desert Rat out; would you: Is that 4000 Canadian RPM or 4000 Estados Unidos RPM. You know that Papa Chuy always messes up this CA/USA conversion thing! jes' sayin'

Steve, it's so very damn hard to be humble; this's just one of the very unique and amazing specialties and attributes of We of the fine FJR Forum. I'm so very proud of all you, My Friends; Bravo!!!

Lot's of wide open space here in Utah. You have much better self control it sounds like than I do. If I leave home without my radar detector, I feel naked! I speed more than I should and my detector saves me probably every 2 weeks or so. Mostly I'm about 15 over, but sometimes.... Well, let's just say I can get carried away. Anyone who has been across the Great Basin in Nevada near Tonapah, extraterestrial hwy, or "The loneliest hwy in America" hwy 6! I held the FJR at 130 for about 30 min straight through that one and still went nowhere! If any Leo's are reading this, thats kph ofcourse.

Papa Chuy, the guy with steel balls and always on the lookout for magnets.... the conversion factor for Estados Unidos RPM differs from Canajan by exactly a ratio of 1.029384756/1.029384756 without time zone conversion for your particular area nor latitude... or maybe that's attitude. But, if you read carefully and decipher this correctly, I think you might safely ignore any differences and no one would be the wiser.

my salvation to this "problem" is my AVCC (AudioVox Cruise Control)...a real electronic cruise...I punch in 79mph and am good to go

secondarily, a throttle lock will help, but acceleration on downhills must be monitored

I nearly said it`s a small world but then anyone who has done any touring in North America knows it isn`t.

Last year on a month long trip to the U.S. I headed north from Vegas through the Great Basin up to Elko NV to stay with friends. I traveled on The Lonliest Road, hwy50 by the way, but before that I ran the fully loaded FJR at 140mph on hwy93. I will never forget the rush as she hauled her way up through the revs or the fear I felt as the bike got strangely light and then started to weave as I backed off the gas.

plug.
