Well The stealer wants $150.00 for the check up and they told me that all they do is change oil, filter and final drive. I am pretty sure that I could do this myself. The question is do I need to take it to them to fufill my warranty requirements (original and YES)? I asked the deaer if a throttle body sink and drive spline lube was included, they told me that was extra!!! I am not sure what I am paying for.

Oil = $36

Filter = $12

Final Drive Gear Lube = $20 for 4 changes

1 hour of labor = $45

Where does the extra $50 bucks go??? :blink:

Seems very steep from the dealer.

Should be about $12.00 worth of oil. Filter less than $10. Mobil Synthetic rear oil for at most $3 for a change. And crush washer for less than $1 each.

Do it yourself and document your maintenance to preserve the warranty. Keep receipts for the supplies you use. FJR1300.info has some very nice pre-done forms for you. And maintenance including oil at FRJTech.com

Criz,

I just had my 600 mile service in NY and paid $308.00. This supposedly included a TBS, oil change, etc.... but the bike still has the same issues as when I brought it in. If I had to do it over again I would put a dab of white out or nail polish on the fasteners you know they need to remove to perform the service to see if they even do it....I seriously have my doubts.

Is anyone having the drive splines checked at 600 miles. Theres been verying reports of "ill lubed" splines from the factory. whats the consensus on this?

I plan to have them check this when I take mine in tomorrow for it's 600 intial check. If even just two reports have mentioned that their splines were poorly lubed, I would still consider this something one should check. ( It's that not knowing that gets to you...lol)

If for some reason they want too much money to do this, I will do it myself, as I have a full tube of Honda Moly 60 sitting on my workbench.

Let me know what they find and how much they charge you to do it.

thanx

local dealer is charging $180.00 and is doing the throttle body sync. it is listed as a 600 mile item to check. says that is the bulk of the cost. so I went ahead and booked. should be last time they do the lubicants on my dime.

Tony's place in Texarkana, Yamaha Sports Center, did my 600 mile oil change, filter and driveline oil change for $65. They also checked the bike over, including air in the tires. The service manager, Monty, works to please the customer. He put us (2 new FJR's on a road trip) right in and gave us fast service and on we went. Great experience.

YES- do it! I had mine checked at the 600 mile service and as those who checked have found they are dry :dribble:

I've got to say, if Yamaha thinks the bike needs to have things checked out at only 600 miles, they need to be paying for it. Anything that is not right then was not right when it was delivered.

I'm sure some will take issue, but that's my opinion and I'm sticking to kit. Hell, for most of us that's only a week or two after they pick it up (for me it will be the next day). I'm having a hard time believing I should pay to have the bike checked out the day after I get it!

I'll do my own, thank you very much.

I don't know of a bike manufacturer that offers free break-in maintenance checks. But I s'pose you could negotiate for this when buying if it was a big issue for ya.

Yeah, me too. For me it's not so much the money, I just don't know of any trustworthy dealers. There's very few besides me who I trust enough to put a wrench to my scoot. Been burned soooo many times. Oh, well. :(

+1! Couldn't agree with you more. Bike manufacturers are getting away with highway-robbery when it comes to warranty issues. There shouldn't be any costs to the new owner during the first year - none! These machines ain't cheap to purchase. There are lots of sedans out there that cost less than a new FJR that have no maintenance costs for three years!

My two cents...

John.

After being disappointed with the "customer service" when purchasing my FJR I made the decision that I was not going to be spending anymore of my hard earned dollars at this dealership. I have a friend that has been riding bikes for over 30 years and has only had one shop in Eugene perform any services on his bikes. I called him yesterday and discussed the 600 miles service, the sync and the splines and he told me that he would be at less than 100. As long as you can document the service intervals per the maintenance schedule, the warranty will be honored by Yamaha. My opinion is that alot of dealers think that they "gotcha" because you bought from them, they would be wrong. Doing the regular services, changing fluids and such is a no brainer on this bike even for someone like me who is somewhat mechanically challenged. My advise is ask your friends who ride and find someone who has a reputation for fairness and quality at an affordable price, I'll bet you'll find someone who can take care of your needs without needing the vasoline. Just my opinion... :D

Easy! Sucker fee = $50 :D

My 600 mile service was just over $160 and the loose as a goose throttle cable was adjusted, TBS sync(they were "almost" synced...doesn't work well with a loose cable on an FJR...). I had the driveshaft pulled and PROPERLY lubed with Honda moly: it had just enuff grease on it so had I waited for a tire change I probably would have had spline damage. Diff was drained, flushed and refilled: needed it...looked like the stuff had been in there for 20K miles with noticeable metallic chaff on the drain plug etc.

Bike now feels like it's "one pc." again, well worth the effort and $. DFO :D

Actually, you don't even have to document that you serviced the bike at all for warranty purposes. By law, a warranty claim cannot be denied unless they can prove that an action (or lack of action) was specifically the cause for the failure.

While documentation is NO GUARANTEE, it sure does make your case better.

Best Regards,

Shane

Won't know what they find till Weds when I pick her up, but they gave me a price of $96.00 for the service....
