Yupper, service tech overfilled. Sight glass shows no air. How bad is this for the engine? Can't be good. No idea how much is really in there. Can the filter be taken off without a huge mess with the tupperware on? I do not notice and difference in Vibes. When my RT had to much oil, it pissed into the air box and had noticeable increase of vibrations. What do ya all think, Barry

Bes,

Well if you sight glass is totally covered, you really don't know how much too much. Did you start it on the center stand and then turn it off and see if there is any change?

Otherwise, if it is still too full, I would unscrew the Oil Drain bolt abit to let some out ( cold of course) and then work the oil level back down to the Top line of the Oil sight glass. This is what the Regional Yamaha Service manager told me.

No I have not tried just taking off the Oil filter by itself.

Hope this helps.

There's no need to loosen the oil drain plug or oil filter and make a mess. All you need to do is take the spray nozzle and straw from a squirt bottle (like windex or similar) and stick the straw into the oil fill opening and start pumping the excess oil into a small container. A syringe or turkey baster could work if you have an extension that allows it to reach the oil.

I hope this is helpful.

To determine (generally) of how much an overfill you have you can put your bike on the centerstand (level surface of coure), start your engine (even overfilled the sight glass should get clear), turn off your engine and see how long it takes to completely fill the sight glass. It may just be slightly overfilled and not cause any damage. You can still take some oil out but at least you'll know that there shouldn't be any damage (due to foaming) if it was just a tad over.

With my '05, if one goes by the book when refilling w/oil after o/f change (IIRC 4qts. + 8 or 12 oz.) the site glass

will show overfull: no air showing in the glass.

Any more, when I do o/f changes, I refill with 4 qts. only. The oil level will show right in the center of the site glass.

Makes me feel better concerning an overfill situation...YMMV.

Just tip the bike and watch the sight glass (best done by 2 people) to see where the level is really. But it really doesn't matter, you are going to want to get rid of some oil.

I have a pump made for sticking in quart sized bottles of gear oil that I picked up at Pep Boys or Auto Zone or some such. Makes short work of getting rid of excess oil.

THANKS GUYS---There is no air visible even while the bike is running. Auto Zone this AM for the pump mentioned above. Thanks again for the input. Barry

Are you sure? If that's the case you are waaay overfull. I find it hard to believe.

Remember, to check for proper oil level FJR needs to be on centerstand, warmed up, and engine shut off AFTER being put on C-stand.

Same here. A one gallon jug of Rotella-T does it.

Hey call me crazy but if you Paid the dealership to do the service and the messed it up have you given any thought to taking it back to them and letting them make a mess of their shop? Also what shop did you go to so I don't use the same one? And we should ride some time. I am new to the area and have no idea where to go. PM me if your interested.
