I did my 600 mile service today. Quite easy except the oil drain plug must have been put on by a 600 lbs gorrilla as it was a task to get off. The rear drive plug was much easier. WTF, who puts a oil drain plug on like that? Oil filter was also easy to get off.

I think I'm really going to like this bike.

hey joe, not to be a wise *** just asking but My dealer wants mine back between 600 and a 1000 and the first service is free. I kinda thought that was the norm, no? Or is it a possibly I have a dealer that wants my business? just curious

Wow, nice dealer. My dealer also said to bring it back between 600 and 1000 but wanted to charge me $200 for the service.

Joe

I also got the first service for free. It runs better at 4000 miles than it did when I first bought it. It made a loud (clunk) when it went into gear and now it is much quieter. Also the new Diablo Strada's make the cornering a dream! I am taking out the Kawasaki 08' Concours for some spirited driving in the twisties for a few hours tomorrow and it will be side to do a side by side comparision.

Good job Joe. I'd do my own service even if it was for free. Now you know it was done right. Later.

Good job performing your own service interval. I usually do my own, however had to have the dealer perform most of the 16k service b/c I was out of town a lot and between the one yr old and house projects didnt have time to do it.

As a result the dealer spilled contact fluid on panel "D" (they replaced it no questions asked), left a mity vac piece on my motor that later fell down to the space above my starter freaking me out b/c I didnt know what it was until the forum helped me out and my clutch lever now sqeaks like a MothF****. The dealership overall is a good one and I still trust them...think they just had a bad day but all the more reason to do more of my own maintenance.

Besides, it gives you a chane to learn more about your bike.

Joe,

Glad to hear the service is so easy. I had my dealer do mine a few weeks ago ($125). Mostly had them do it because at 580 miles a significant amount of shaft drive oil blew out of the plug and got all over the back of the bike. The head mechanic said whoever assembled the bike most likely put too much in... uh, wouldn't that have been them? Made 'em clean up the mess and recheck their "assembly." Everything seems to be fine now.

I'd have to agree, this is going to be a great bike!

Did my 600 mile service.

I had to use a cheater bar to remove the oil drain plug.

And no, I did not try to loosen it the wrong way. Righty tighty, lefty loosey, or however you spell loosey.

And having done this, I now have bonded with my new machine.

My 06 ae was cluncky at first too. I'm at 3k and mine is smooth as silk now, I thinks its more learning how to shift the AE then the miles themselves that smoothed out the clunk. I have noticed that my bike is way better overall now then it was at new.

Did you Sync the TB's?

I had my dealer do that, since I didn't have the time.

I spell Loosey Deni...Nevermind random thought.

My dealer is going to charge but I figure to let them do the first one then I will do the rest. It is nice that it has a center stand. My Triumph didn't and it made doing the service a *****. Sorta like Den.... Nevermind.

I had my dealer do my 600 mile service, paid the $200.00 or so and have regretted not doing it myself. Shifting felt a bit funny leaving the dealer, I thought maybe I was just feeling it different due to having new boots on for the first ride. As I went a few more miles shifting from 2-3 and 3-4 became difficult and sometimes required 2 or 3 tugs on the shifter. I got the bike home and checked it over, no leaks or any other obvious things wrong. The next morning when I shifted it into first the bike stalled. The clutch refused to dis-engage with cold oil in the trans. Left it parked in the garage and took the truck. That afternoon I looked a bit closer and realized the oil in the engine smelled more like gear oil than motor oil. Draining it verified that the tech put the wrong oil in the engine. 75w gear oil in a crankcase and transmission is not good! In 60 miles of driving the gear oil was in bad shape. Fresh oil and filter and my shifting is back close to normal again. I am waiting for a call back from the service manager. Unless there is a warrenty issue I doubt Yamaha techs will ever touch my bike again.

Ed,

That sucks. I would also be pissed. Can you tell me which dealer this was? I have always done all my maintenance but I may need a dealer at some time for more complicated things. I hope they give you your $200 back because that is unacceptable. Sounds like the tech has no clue what he was doing.

Do you think any damage was done?

The dealer is Stadium Yamaha, and the service manager is willing to look at the sample I saved from my crankcase. While they are not yet admitting to making a mistake, I am pleased that at least they are not ruling it out and are willing to investigate what happened.
