When I fired up my XP desktop computer this morning the Microsoft Automatic Update system downloaded some stuff and then I restarted the computer to install the updates.

Not good. After installing the updates I couldn't connect to the internet. Something was blocking my connection.

I removed the updates using the "Add or Remove Programs" in the Control Panel, restarted the computer and I could connect to the internet again.

I saw a bit later that ZoneAlarm, my firewall program, did not like one of the Microsoft updates.

Sssshhhh! Keep quiet or we are going to have the MAC drones climbing all over this thread! They will starting touting the #1 computer that 3.5% of the people in the world use.

I had the same problem. After the usual router rebootings were ineffective, I ran diagnostics. The details of the report looked like the computer was confused over the coexistance of Bluetooth along with other wireless adapter. I turned the Bluetooth off and it connected virtually instantly.

I don't really care what people choose to use, it's just a computer, but I just did some consulting to a very very large site that is targeted at 18-35 year olds and their user data shows that 40% of their users are on Macs, which absolutely surprised me.

I have the same problem. I just started troubleshooting and found that when I turned off Zone Alarm I could connect. I just have it off right not (im behind a router w/ a firewall so im not too worried). Ill have to try the medium setting to see how that works...

Thanks for the info....

Sssshhhh! You'll drive jwilly to drinking!

On one client's PC, I had to install SP3 by disk in Safe Mode. The AV software kept blocking changes to the Registry and it didn't have an "off" control - even when it was shut down.

I saw that user data as well, and 40% of the users are still living in their parent's basement.

I have 3 Macs. And, I'll have you know, I DO NOT live in my parent's basement.

They don't have a basement.

So, would any of this relate to programs hanging if they needed to connect to the interwebs, too?

I just downloaded the Map Source 2009 from Garmin, get just past the screen where you plug in the product code, hit next and computer resources go straight to full max and it locks (the program, mostly - I can still bring up Task Manager and kill the MS2009 .exe and the system returns to normal).

Where's my ******' abacus?! <_<

I don't run xp's firewall or zonealarm behind my router's firewall.

i have a mac; it's a decent platform to run Linux :) (that's what most people I know do with them..)
