90 degree valve stems

I have them on three bikes, no issues with leaks and no loctite used.

I had to turn the ones that came on my FJR around - they were pointing to the left, which is great if you park on the center stand but not so good if you want to check the tires on the side stand. :) The nuts were not as tight as I would have liked but yet still no leaks.

FredW, thanks for advise on the mounting the Michelins. I have some Roadtec 01 coming it and will check to see if any markings.

eflyguy, thanks, I did think about this one and will mount pointing to the right as best for checking when on side stand !

 
I know one person who developed a leak at the seal on his 83 degree valve stems. He replaced the o-rings and was good to go. And that leads me to the question, do you folks ever replace the o-rings?

Not as of yet. I suppose the o-ring could fail, but once I installed mine about 9 year ago they've remained static and no leaks. I could imagine a slowly deteriorating o-ring could produce an increasing leak over time, but then would diagnose it and replace at the next convenient tire change. Or maybe the decade mark will be the time that I'll replace the stems as the threads on the valve cover are wearing a bit from the cap. A decade is a pretty good service life for these products considering the amount of tires I've gone through.

They really aren't typical o-rings. They have an L shaped cross section so they seal along the shaft of the valve as well as the rim surface perpendicular to it, and they are harder rubber than your typical o-ring too.

Like Iggy said, once you get it in place properly (and without munging it up) it should last the life span of the valve, which I have not been able to find the end of yet.

As usual, I appreciate ya. That was my thoughts as well. Considering I was 68 years old when I installed them, I expect they'll outlast me.

I'm sure people who offer replacements would be able to advise on how often they should be replaced..

Well I have some 90 degree valve stems but unfortunately, I can't comment on them because Pants is an *****.
My friend Redfish Hunter thoughtfully bought me a set of 90 degree stems recently. I put them in my tank bag and did what apparently people do when they turn 50 years old - I forgot about them. At the next tire change, while I'm standing next to my guy who is about 40 miles from home BTW - the light bulb went off. So now, I will be waiting 9-12,000 more miles for that little upgrade.

If my head wasn't screwed and torqued onto my neck, he'd forget that at times too. (sigh)
That is called the

redfish effect. :)

 
Two pairs of 90 degree valve stems from Kurveygirl. One pair on the FJR, one pair on the V-Strom. They have been very good buys. :)

 
And now a programming note!!!

As corrective action to my post #15 of this thread, whereby I insulted my good friend Redfish Hunter, who thoughtfully bought me a pair of 90 degree valve stems, and yet I forgot to bring them during my last tire change.... I have hereby taped said valve stems to my new set of PR2s recently received and sitting on my shop floor, waiting for their rolling turn on the red beast.

(Hey - I think that sentence was ACTUALLY grammatically correct!!!)

Hopefully that will prevent another brain fart......

And your friend is patiently waiting to hear how they perform on the '14.

When I ordered the last set of these stems from Kurveygirl, I also ordered a set of the replacement rubber gaskets. When the techs at the Yamaha dealership originally installed Dad's they pointed LEFT. Why they did that we have no idea. I wanted them to point to the right and we decided that new gaskets might be cheap insurance since they had to be turned 180 degrees.

No leaks yet. We have replaced a leaking core in the front stem but that was a quick and easy fix.
