As I was out for a leisurly 600 mile ride a few weeks ago, I thought about some sort of twist on a Long Distance rally. We all hear about rides such as the Texas Two-Step, the Spank Rally, Utah 1088, Mason Dixon 20-20, etc, but, as they are all geographically disperse, there doesn't seem to be any type of rally in which people from all areas of the country can participate. I was thinking about something along the lines of 'Poker Run Insanity'.

We've all heard of local clubs doing poker runs where they go stop-to-stop to pick up cards to form poker hands, but, they are usually very short and very boring. I was thinking of something along the lines of combining the modest challenge of doing a SS1000 and collecting (2) $1 chips (reasoning for the (2) chips listed below) from casinos in Vegas, Atlantic City, or Canada, and also casinos on the various Indian Reservations across the US that have gaming (click the following link to see the map that shows the states that have gaming - click on the state and the list of casinos pops up on the left border of the page https://www.indiangaming.org/mq/frame ).

Each participant must successfully complete a SS1000 and it's up to each rider to ensure he/she follows the guidelines.

The 2 reasons for getting (2) chips:

1) Keep 1 chip as a souvenier for your trip and you could have them framed with your SS1000 certificate

2) Send the other chip to the winner. The winner would be the rider that collects the most chips and also provides the appropriate documentation for completing the SS1000. It would then be up to the winner to travel the country and spend his/her winnings. In the event of a tie, the winner would be the rider that traveled the longest distance in the 24 hour period.

Obviously, there would have to be some guidelines to prevent someone from going to Vegas and collecting 1 chip from every casino - perhaps 1 chip for every 50 mile radius?

All participants would do the ride on the same day. Perhaps during the planning stages, riders from different areas could meet up with riders from different geographies on their way to collecting chips.

Obviously, this is very crude in the planning stages and I haven't even decided with any amount of certainty that I would want to try to pull this off, but, wanted to get some thoughts before I go any further.

Any idea if the IBA would consider being involved with something like this?

Does anyone know of any LD rally where participants from many geographies can participate simultaneously?

Any and all input is appreciated.

Randy,

From what I understand The Grand Tour that the Team Strange boys put on is something like you are thinking. Doesn't matter were you are from, just have to do the rally by the closing date. Go here and click on the Grand Tour link.

Sounds like fun to me. Planning on doing it next year.

I rode in Teamstranges "World's Biggest Poker run" this summer. They do some pretty cool events. Also check out The Glacial Lakes Motorcycle Club www.glmc.org . I ran their Harvest Rally this fall and had a great time.

Another "virtual rally" like that was the Roadkill Safari rally. People collected town names that were those of animals (no duplicate names). Riders were very creative and got places like "Draco" (dragon) and others.

The web site was taken down when the rally finished (2004) but Wayback found some archives.

Thanks for the feedback. In addition to letting me know about similar events, let me know what you think of this idea. Don't worry - I have thick skin.

I think it’s an interesting idea. I guess Casinos wouldn’t interest me that much. I think it would be pretty difficult to create a level playing field for folks to do a one day run for points from there home. I’d have to run down to Connecticut and New Jersey. I could probably get 3 casinos in 24 hours, and the riding wouldn’t be very good.

I’ve been meaning to get a National Parks pass and take a shot at an IBA National Parks tour. Maybe you could work a point system out to level the field a bit for folks in the big states out west.

A friend threw this spreadsheet up on the web for me.

It lists the US states and Canadian Provinces with their corresponding land areas. The two sections to the right illustrate two hypothetical tours. One example is for me starting in Maine and another for someone out in the southwest.

The spreadsheet is here:

Might be a bear to administer, and the IBA might not like the use of there tour for something like this.

Maybe they would like to pick it up as an IBA Grand Tour for the IBR off year.

Another piece might be to grant additional points/mile for certified IBA rides during the tour.

I also thought about granting points for Platinum, Gold, Silver Parks tour finishers, but I felt this method gave the greatest degree of fairness based on your geographic location.

I realize this is not really apples to apples with what you proposed, but I like the idea of turning the National Parks tour into a friendly competition.

Thanks for the feedback, Chris.

Regarding the point system, that would be an interesting twist worth considering.

To your point about not being able to hit too many casinos, there are 6 in New York and 3 in CT - might not have to deal with heading to Atlantic City. I think the riding through NY state would be much better than just eating miles on I95 and the AC Expressway.

Quite an idea.

It would take at least 10 minutes of parking, going in for chip, and leaving.

I don't know if it would draw riders. I would say IB riders do IBA for the ride.

I don't think casino chips thown into it would be tantalizing.

This would add more non-riding time to the whole day.

Having to go spend the chips if you win ? Would they want to ?

I did think about the time to go in and get the chips. For me, I think the absolute best I could do is about 10 chips. At 10 minutes each, that's 100 minutes which leaves 22 hrs and 20 minutes for riding - plenty of time to do a SS1000. I think that equates to an average of 45 mph - seems very doable.

Regarding the value of the prize pool, sure, it's not something that you can retire on, but, it's an interesting bonus on top of the certificate that you get for doing a SS1000. Plus, I think it would make a fun story to tell. I see it as not so much the kill, but, the thrill of the chase.

I certainly wouldn't expect the elite of the LD community to participate in something as trivial as this, but, you never know. What it might do is introduce someone to LD riding that is looking for more of a reason to tackle their first IBA ride.

I appreciate your response.

Keep 'em coming....
