A Run for Lunch to Mount Magazine (2 February, 2008)

We escaped the house at 10:34 this morning. John let me sleep in this morning, so it was a late start. The sky was bright blue and the temp on the bike was 48 degs. Taking our normal route to get to Hwy 22.

The bike is ready!

I hate my picture being taken, Alphawolf.

Whitewolf kicked back and ready to go.

Greenwood traffic was heavy for a Saturday morning. On hwy 96 north out of Greenwood, we passed the burned area from the big grass fires from last Tuesday. 12 Barracks burnt down in another fire on Fort Chaffee. Hwy 96 runs right through Fort Chaffee. At Hwy 96 and Hwy 22 intersection (yes, there is a stop light out in the middle of no where.), we turned east and headed to Paris, AR.

The first rest break was going to be at Charleston, AR.

It is a nice small town. There was a few things happened there while we rested. First, a young lady, not having to many clothes on was parading around, trying to get attention to her, and no I didn’t get you a picture! Second, another young lady came up and asked if I could give her a cigarette; which I replied that she was not old enough to smoke. She walked off upset about it. I will not give one to a minor. After that we loaded up afterwards and headed again to Paris.

Smoking and resting at Charleston.

Our next stop was just out of Paris at the Cowie Winery. They have wonderful wines, which are major award winners. This is where the national wine competition is held the last week of April, guess you know where we’ll be. We tasted a few wines and bought three bottles. Whitewolf’s favorite is the Mt Magazine Sunset. The temp was 54 degs in the picnic area of the winery.

Here are a couple more shots of the winery and parking areas.

After tasting the wines we headed up a curvy road, or so whitewolf said it was, and headed into Paris on Hwy 22 East. When we got to downtown Paris we turned south onto Hwy 309 and drove towards the state park. Outside of Paris we started picking up the lovely sanded roads which made driving even more interesting. The higher we got onto the mountain something special was still left from the last storm, temp. was 54 degs. But from the pictures you can see what was left behind.

Of course we played like kids in the snow and had a snowball fight, I WON!!!! Sadly, we left and headed up to the ranger’s station. We had to use their facilities due to the wine and soda’s. There was still snow here too.

Now that we had finished we headed off for the important task of reaching the lodge and filling our bellies. It was surprising to see the amount of snow still in the parking lot as we pulled in. Plus the crowd was much less compared to the last visit we had. Here are a few pics we took while at the lodge.

Here are couple of breath taking scenic shots from the lodge area to help enhance the wonderful meal.

If you ever get a chance to go eat at the lodge I highly recommend it. The food is excellent, priced right, and the scenery is breath taking! After walking the sidewalk sections of the lodge we headed back to the bike, loaded up, and started to head out when John realized his helmet was unstrapped. I wished I could remember the park ranger’s name that stopped and asked if we were okay. He was very knowledgeable about motorcycles and showed us his two wonderful babies, Ducatis. What is with you men, no pictures of family but loads of pictures of your motorcycles on your cell phones??? After a long visit with him we headed south on Hwy 309 again. This was major fun and John was definitely puckering the whole time due to the amount of sand on the road. He made the comment that he preferred ice over sand. Reaching Hwy 10 we turned west and headed towards Booneville where we took a break. Met an older gentlemen who loves HD’s and owns a 1936 model. He kept asking us questions off and on about our FJR, he thought it was a BMW, hope he has glasses for driving! After a disappointing break, no chocolate for a dip cone, the drive was uneventful back to Hackett. There were events after we got home but I will leave that for another story.

Thank you again for reading about our adventure.
