A warning to AE owners

I thought I would relay my experience and save someone else the possibility of broken parts. I was out for an evening ride, went by my buddys house and he was out working on his car. I pulled up in front of his driveway, he sees me and comes walking over. Still sitting on the bike with it idling, I shake his hand, he gives the bike a quick once over, makes a postitive comment about it, and reaches out to give it the obligatory throtte rev. :blink: Well you can guess what happened next. Fortunately I had my right foot on the footbrake at the time. The bike leapt forward about 2 feet, he jumped back about 2 feet with eyes as big as saucers, and I got ready to change my underwear. No damage occured but it certainly had potential to be a big mess. So suffice it to say, If I stop anywhere in the presence of other humans, its coming out of gear.

I could see that happening. Bad etiquette or not, I know about 3 or 4 guys that would do that, one of which would probably have sent you across the neighborhood.

The first thing I tell anyone around my bike, particularly if they are going to ride it, is that cracking the throttle under ANY circumstances may cause the bike to shoot out from under you.

Fuel injection does NOT require you to do anything with the throttle particularly when starting. That's the other warning I give guys... DON'T TOUCH THE THROTTLE when you start the bike. I leave the bike in gear a lot and use the kill switch when I stop. Not necessarily safe, particularly with this bike. Old habits die hard. At least I was NEVER one to "blip the throttle". Now it's paying off. YIKES! Glad you have to be on the brake when you start it.

Your buddy is lucky he isn't buying you a couple grand in new parts.

I don't get this blipping the throttle thing. Isn't that just for Harley riders? :blink:

But I could easily see this happening. Like mentioned above, "new bike, let's hear it!"

The AE requires a new mindset and new riding techniques.

This situation is one of them.

Make it a habit to shift to "N" while idling where it is safe to stop - like at your driveway, but not at a stop light.

Spot on, Happened to me and I almost hit my damm truck. Got a handfullo front brake after the bike tore outa my buddies hand and I was tossed back forward, saved the truck and bike. LMAO It was my HARLEY riding neighbor did it right AFTER I showed him how the paddle put it in first. He knew it was in 1st, just forgot in the long 3 second span before he wanted to hear the bike. I went about 10 feet and was lucky as hell

Maybe Mama Yama and Darwin have a conspiracy to do away with all "braaaappers" (or at least their friends' bikes) through natural selection.

I actually saw a briefly absent-minded AE owner launch himself at WFO. He just gave it a couple of enthusiastic revs, the last of which was above threshold, and off he went. He recovered just fine, but it was worth a chuckle.
