Had an accident last saturday morning going up to CT for a BMW techdaze no less. I was with 2 other riders and in the lead, approaching a stop sign and slowing down...rider behind me on an R1200RT hits me in the backend. We don't go down but my right sidebag flew off at the moment of impact. We both pullover to the side of the road and glance at the damage..license plate bracket is broken and sidebag is toast..had to bungee cord it back on. We were going to try and settle it with no insurance involved but we kept noticing more things wrong as the day wore on....i noticed the painted mount for the FJR with the 3 bolts in it was cracked by the saddle bag. We spent the weekend up there for this tech day. Upon returning home i took the seat off and that rear subframe was cracked on both the left and right sides! So we decided to go through insurance before this as his electronic windshield wasn't working and you could move the shield up and down by hand. Other things i noticed...that painted bracket was broken on both sides as well under the seat. It looks like his tire hit my right side exhaust as tire marks were on it..that wasn't damaged though...most of the hit was absorbed in that top bracket. Is that subframe replaceable? From what it looks like on the microfiche it looks like its bolted on.

Right now i'm waiting for an insurance adjust to assess the damage but thinking of getting it to a dealer for them to look at it. The bike is rideable and notice no new vibrations or anything like that.

Sorry for that kind of wreck. But it is the kind to have , equipment only broke not people.

What was that other rider thinking? I guess he got tired of following and wanted to take the lead.

weekend rider :D

he was looking to the left at oncoming traffic and didn't see me stop in time...also, he was too close for comfort but didn't see my brake lights until it was too late. Yes, good thing no injuries...just my pride and joy! :(

Had a similar incident a few years ago on the HD. We had stopped at a dealer that was having an event in Jamestown, Ca. and one of the riders that was with us had a "few beers" and only minutes after we had left I had pulled over to let some of the group catch up and I got rear ended. Lesson learned, be "real" particular who you ride with! I don't drink and drive and only on occasion do I even have a drink. So to me this was unexcussable. I didn't want to make any waves and repaired the damage myself as it wasn't too much. Your case sounds like insurance for sure and glad no one was hurt. PM. <><

Rich,

That subframe can sometimes be repaired and it certainly can be replaced (at a cost of < $600).

Keithaba on this Forum will be tackling that task in the next few days on his Gen.1 FJR.

bike is at my local dealer (FW SPEERS) in Paterson, NJ! New Jersey's oldest dealer! So they're going to do a tear down up to the swingarm hopefully just to see if anything else may be out of alignment from the impact. Also, they'll do a wheel alignment just to check it out....cool!

Sorry about that incident.

If it was his fault I'd just say let the insurance handle it. Your in for a lot of work if you don't have them handle it. If they do, you may still be able to take the money from the estiamte and do it yourself a lot cheaper. It all depends on how much time you want to spend.

There is a great post by Ignachio on the removal of a rear subframe. I couldn't find it for some reason, but I'm sure it was there.

The part can be had new from U-motors, but it won't be cheap. You can call them to get a price.

yes, i'm hoping to just cross that bridge when i get to it. Right now they have to get the estimate done and see how much percentage fault wise i can get...should be 100% as he hit me, but one never knows with insurance. I never got a police report...can you do that after the fact? and do you need to have both parties present to get one created? it was up in CT so i have to call their local police dept. I guess.

Man that sucks, glad nobody was hurt.

If he's man enough to own up to it and admit fault with his insurance, no police report *should* be needed. All it should take is a call from him to them.

Of course there are a ton of variables, each insurance company attacks this differently. The best case scenario is if you both have the same insurance company, someone good like State Farm (good is my opinion, may not necessarily be those of others, and I'm fully aware that they have screwed their share of people :/ )

thanks for the advice. I believe he did admit fault and emails me now and asks if I need anything. So i do think he's owning up to it so far.

Sorry to hear about the bang-up, good everyone's all right. In NY, if you rearend someone, it's automatically your fault, no questions asked. Good luck with the fix, maybe you'll get a farkle or 2 out of it.

i just got the estimate..2,900 bucks! parts and labor. They're replacing a lot...sidebag, sub-frame, right side muffler, that handseat (painted bracket), a tail bracket and hardware for the plastic parts along with a license plate bracket...also, i told them to throw on the reflective kit i put on the sidebag (20 bucks). Called this guy's insurance company so they have to take a look and then give the go ahead. I was tempted just to tell the dealer to order the parts but figured i can wait until tomorrow and call them again..i'm sure they're in no hurry. But they did say there is no question on fault so i'm hoping it should be 100% paid for...now the other question is will they talk the dealer out of replacing certain parts.

i have a trip to WV on 5/17 so i'm in deep dodo if i can't get this done.

Well, I'd be worried about parts being on backorder. I think if they had the parts a mechanic could do all of the work in a day or two, but without the parts (subframe especially) it just aint gonna happen!

If the insurance agree's to pay the $2900, ask the dealership if they'll work with you on the parts that are ordered. This could be a good time to save some money and get an aftermarket exhaust. I think the stock system is close to a grand by itself!

They're in Passaic, not Paterson. I'd like to hear Vito's reaction when you say they're in Paterson.

Who's the one taking care of it? Is it Ray? I've never met a better tech than Ray. I assume you're close to there. I'm not far from there...bought mine there back in '02.

Excellent dealer. BTW, they're NJ's oldest "YAMAHA" dealer.

they're replacing only the right side muffler (600 bucks) so i'm not really looking to get anything custom at this point...just fix it!

yes, it was Ray! He's their service manager. Heard good stories about this dealer so i'm hoping they replace all the parts on their estimate.

a neighbor of mine goes there and bought a few bikes from them, hence he recommended them for this. Oops, yeah on passaic vs. paterson...big difference!

For $30-50 more you could get a set of Holeshot's installed. This is probably the cheapest time to get some aftermarket stuff if you think you may want to in the future.

great news! progressive is paying the full amount! all parts on the estimate...so now i'm really thinking of that holeshot exhaust as it would be a deal to get it now LOL....no chip is needed for these right? just bolt them on and off I go?

WTF, I thought BMWs had good brakes?? I hope you smacked that fool silly!!

Well, no matter what, if you are going to have an accident, that was the best kind - no body hurt, you were the one who was hit, and it was a BMW owner who caused the whole thing.
