Was doing @ 80 and felt "something" hit my leg. Not a hard hit....could have been a piece of cardboard, or perhaps a small bit of road kill (didn't see anything). Something told me to stop, so pulled it over at the next gas station, and did a double take when I realized the right side middle ("adjustable") faring had taken flight. Tore itself right off the bolts....

So the bottom hinges let go, then the air caught it and took it.

Anyone else had this happen?

Anyone have one (or 2 that are a matching color) for sale?

If the bottom metal hinges let go they can be replaced . . . presuming that the cowling itself isn't damaged . . . if the plastic hinge pins on the deflector 'just let go' then more than likely they were seriously stressed at some point in the past - and it would have to be 'seriously' or else one or both they simply were not properly snapped into the hinge plate by whomever installed them last and the panel was eventually caught in the wind blast.

FJRGuy lost his on his run to CFR (also from an '07) - so the issue isn't unheard of

Part numbers with prices from Ronayers.com:

Qty Price Part

2 $04.98 3P6-21796-00-00 HINGE

4 $01.05 90267-32103-00 RIVET, BLIND

1 $61.76 3P6-2830D-00-P5 VISOR, SIDE 2 (VDRM2 - '07 burgundy)

2 $00.36 3P6-28217-00-00 DAMPER 1 (may be included with the Visor)

If the cowling is broken, I noticed that there are two part numbers listed for the '07 . . . you'll have the figure out what the difference is.

This has to be aGen II issue. I never heard of it on a GEN I bike. I do not have any fairing pieces to go blowing off in the wind. :yahoo:

Actually, mine blew off much earlier than that trip. I had them in the outward position and lost the left side doing about a buck forty at the time.

Canucklehead lost his right one on our run to CFR. '06 AE, inward position, travelling about 60 with a very heavy cross wind.

I think someone at WCR (sorry can't remember who at the moment) said they also had this happen to them.

In absence of any other logical explanation, I blame them all on the clips NOT being properly engaged.

Ummm... DUH! But the price we pay for a cooler, better looking bike! :p

Happened to me on my then-new 2006A. Yamaha replaced the damaged piece. I was going about 80 and accelerating at the time. I leave the panel in and leave it now. No problems since (with that piece on the bike at least).

It was me that lost the other one. In an irrational fit of exuberance, I was doing a little north of 180 when I felt something hit my left shin. I thought it was a small bird strike but when we got into the campground that night, Noire says,"Hey, did you lose a piece off your bike?"

I ride an '07 too and I keep the fairings in the "out" position all the time. I think mine may have been cracked from the previous year when I dropped the bike in the dirt; that might have weakened it.

I hate putting them back on after doing maintenance. It always feels like the weak little hinge piece will break. I wonder if they weaken over time from taking them off over time? I leave them in all the time, can't really tell a difference either way.
