So, after unwittingly hijacking a thread from Dave (much apologies amigo!), a ride was put together to satisfy the dirt(y) itch of a few folks here in the Northeast. As it turned out, the ride was also part of a Duck Hunt from ADVrider.com. :)

As with many rides when one is trying to remember things, sometimes the details get lost or cloudy from trying to cram in so many at one time. This was exacerbated for me by starting a day long ride after having worked a 12 hour over-night shift beforehand. But, I will say that this ride was so much fun, that I never felt tired once during the ride! I was so looking forward to it that several times during the night, I went out to just go mess with the bike! I'm not sure who was more lonely, me or the KLX!

I created my route using low tech GPS at 0400.

We were to meet at Hooya's in Brimfield, Ma for 9:00 a.m. I was only late by a couple of minutes because I had missed a turn but figured it out within a couple of miles and my gut telling me to turn around ;) . The low-tech GPS was awesome, it wasn't yelling in my ear at every turn but could've been helpful in not missing the turn. No biggie, I thought.

Of course no thread is complete for the Northeast group without food ****!! This one's for you Fred, since you couldn't make it on the Manstrom! :p

Here were the bikes involved, starting with MrBill since this was his ride. This is a 650 Enduro and looked/sounded like well put together piece of machinery. She could scoot, too! But I was on a weed whacker, so hard to really compare apples to oranges.

IMG_4808.jpg

This is Sam's Suzuki, it too is a 650. His bike I believe had Trailwings (affectionately referred to as Deathwings by some  ) and were more dual purpose without knobbies. This led to some cornering issues on the gravel that wasn't hardpack since we were moving at a moderate pace, but he did a good job of keeping up.

Alan (non-Ionbeam type) was riding a stocker WR250R that seemed to be comparable to my green machine. I had recently changed my front sprocket to a smaller one for improved low end grunt as well as ease of low speed maneuvering with less clutch play but it seemed just fine to me. It ran smooth and we were able to maintain highway speeds without any issue. His only complaint about the bike that I could pick out was that he thought it was anemic on torque.

The day started as overcast and had rained during the night. My ride from work getting to Hooya's was dry except for the water dripping off the trees. We started out dry, but soon found ourselves in the rain; mostly light but there was enough rain to get me soaked through my gear. Fortunately it was warm enough that I wasn't cold. I thought the day was going to be warm and sunny, so I had brought my off road sunglasses instead of goggles. This was to prove a mistake! The rain, even though light, stung at speeds over 40 mph. Not bad, but enough to give me an appreciation (relative term) for those who go without a full face helmet or no helmet at all! It was also a mistake because it was hard to see in the dimly lit wooded areas where the sun wasn't out and the foliage absorbed the rest of the available light! Ooops! Lesson learned...

The sunglasses held up well, though. They are ESS brand, which many of our fine men and women in uniform use due to their ruggedness. I bought them for that reason, but also because they are designed to fit under hearing protection and fit snug to the sides of your head. They also have short arms which, combined with the low profile, makes them ideal (for me) to use with a full faced helmet. YMMV. Here's the group at one of the stops in the morning getting to the Trans Mass Trail. We started out in Brimfield, then traveled south and west through Connecticut to get to the beginning, about 80 miles.

As the day progressed and we made ourselves northward along the TMT, we stopped where it crosses over the Mass Pike, just east of Lee, Mass. By this point my gear was dry but my base layer was still wet. This actually proved to be a good thing because even though it was warm outside, I was kept cool by the evaporational cooling process! Well, time to make the doughnuts, so will be back tomorrow for the second installment!

Great report CJ! Looking forward to part 2. :clapping:

Did you notice the tornado damage leaving HooYahs along SR19? Half mile wide path along there.

Liking the read...I am in your neck of the woods, so it is not totally foreign to me...i really should give this off road thing a shot...basically have run out of new roads in NE....why I am travelling west in about 2 weeks.

Part 2 Part 2

Willie

Bill, I didn't see it, but then again no one bothered to point it out before we left! :p I did see some areas that I did sorta scratch my head and wonder...

Willie- would love to get a small band of fjrforumites together to do some off/backroad excursions. Go ahead, I'm sure she won't mind!!

Fred- There's still plenty of time. Keep your eyes peeled for Mr Bill's Puppy Dog Run, I hope to make it, but if I can't, perhaps we could do a midweek run of it?

Paging Skip to the bat phone...... I know he's over on ADV, I can ping him there if he's not here much.

Part 2:

At the overpass of the Mass Pike, we discussed the current location of the Dirty Duck for the ADV Duck Hunt. Apparently, Bill knew the general whereabouts of the context clue in the photos and we went straight to it, easy peasy. :) Ducky was definitely dehydrated and in dire need of a bath! We all felt the urge to bring him to a more appropriate location where he could feel more at home. The roads getting there were a nice mix of dirt/gravel with small town two lane with very light traffic and a few high speed turns thrown in to satisfy the Hooligan in us! There were a few sections that were more comfortable riding while standing, but could've easily been ridden in a seated position. Nothing really technical, just some light ruts and rocks. The day was getting warmer after the skies had cleared which brought about a new teaching point for grasshopper: bugs are worse than rain with no goggles AND no ear plugs! I swear at least a dozen times insects got into my helmet and the little bastages went straight for the ears! Drove me nucking futs!

Here is where the Hooligans found the poor little duckie...

IMG_4815.jpg

Apparently, the TWN salute is also incorporated as the official ADV salute according to a friend of mine! :****: Left to right is Bill, Alan, myself, and Sam.

Bill put Dirty Duck on his Katoom to bring him to his new hiding spot and immediately began quacking and snapping! Apparently, he doesn't like orange bikes...

IMG_4816.jpg

So, we transferred him to my green machine and he instantly settled down and got that rubber duckie look on his face and we knew we were good to go! Smart duck. ;)

IMG_4820.jpg

So off we road a peace and diligently looked for a more suitable spot for the little guy. What better place to put a duck than near the water? Here are the two photos that were posted up on ADV as the hint photos...

After confident that we left Dirty Duck in a good spot, we rode on for the last leg of the ride into Greenfield to fuel up and say our goodbyes. :bye2:

We headed east on Rt 2 and the 650's were just better suited for higher speeds, so we ended up splitting up into two groups. Everyone else turned off to o south as I trekked on eastward to home. Total mileage for the day for me was right around 280 miles. I was happy to get off the stock seat by that point. Well, gonna wrap this up and conclude later, as the weather is getting really nasty with lots of lightning here.... :(

Nice RR, CJ.

I like the idea of having a mascot for the tag object. I'll have to fimnd that thread on ADV and get subscribed to that. Not surer when I'd be able to go after the ducky, but I'm sure it will have moved a bunch by then.

Since you are the master high-jack-er, I feel it is only fair to high-jack one of your threads. :p

What ever happened to the New England scavenger hunt that Willie was proposing?

Oops I had it WOT going up that passing lane on Rt 2 to get past the 4 wheelers. I broke off shortly after that to go down 122 back to Fiskdale.

I thought another tornado was going to go by tonight, but the storm passed way South of us here and went into CT.

Thank you Mr CJ, another great installment of the TMT ride! :clapping:

Fred, the funny thing is I don't feel you hijacked the thread at all... I see it as the natural evolution of dialogue that flows from one idea to another. If something (Dave's discussion of riding off-road)sparks an idea or a thought process (my idea for a dual sport ride), then to discuss it as it relates to what you are thinking about seems only logical. This is how normal conversation flows, so I don't see what's wrong with it. If I am assuming correctly, you/we are specifically referring to Dave's ride report in which one idea sparked another but then led to a separate topic of discussion that perhaps was more extensive than need be, thereby distracting from the original content of Dave's intended discussion. This was aptly picked up on by Mr. Bill and he made the appropriate call to take the discussion elsewhere. Realizing that perhaps a thread hijacking DID take place, I made a sincere gesture to apologize to the OP for which no malicious intent was implied by my act of commission. It is also my contention that the OP did NOT get pissed off as was implied by Mr Bill. However, given the lack of response by the OP, it is impossible to know with any certainty whether or not any offense was taken. I discount the notion, in fact, that the OP was indeed pissed off based on circumstantial evidence of having read many of his responses to threads as well as having met him in person and he does not seem the type to be offended easily. Irked, perhaps, but not pissed off. I heartily welcome your efforts to hijack this thread in an attempt at playful banter as a means of retribution on one's behalf. I do question, however, the validity of your statement of supposition that labels me as the "Master High-jack-er". Aside from the aforementioned incident, upon which evidence would you present your case? To support my initial assertion, I offer you the fact that from one thought, spun four of your own. First, that you feel a mascot could be viewed in a positive light to serve as the object for a tag object. Second, that you displayed interest in partaking in another forum's activities of off-road debauchery. In addition, you clearly make a biased accusation asserting that this individual is responsible for atrocities against another member of this illustrious forum which could possibly be interpreted as having violated the forum's guideline #4 and to some extent, #6. Lastly, I would point out that your fourth statement, or in this case inquiry, has nothing to do with the original content of THIS thread whatsoever. It does however, bring us to another separate idea and possible point for further discussion, which could be construed as a "thread high-jack-ing" if it were to lead to dialogue away from the subject matter at hand. This would indicate that you would be equally liable for carrying the same weight for which you have burdened me when you labeled me as the sinister "Master" of hi-jacking in a not-so surreptitious manner. As has been demonstrated, it should not be that difficult to understand how one can transcend from one idea to another within the natural ebb and flow of conversation, including such formats as internet forums without causing undue hostilities whether real or implied!

My head is spinning after reading that. Were you two saying something like this?

Robin: "You can't get away from Batman that easy!"

Batman: "Easily."

Robin: "Easily."

Batman: "Good grammar is essential, Robin."

Robin: "Thank you."

Batman: "You're welcome."

And how did my name get in there? I didn't imply nothin. I was just jerking FJRForMe's chain, but he was too cool to bite. Just don't highjack the moderators threads around these parts. Ask me how I know

Bwahahahaha! Too funny, especially the "Ask me how I know" part!!

This rant was just an exercise for me to remain conscious.. I **** you not when I say that since my good nights sleep since Sunday, I got two hours Monday, three hours Tuesday, and the clock is whittling down for me now before I have to go to work at eleven tonight, so I best shut the hell up and go to bed! I just got home from taking my son to get his football gear from handout. The other reason was just to mess with Fred cuz he's a good guy with a quirky sense of humor and he's one smart SOB..... far superior intellect than myself, hands down. But I ride faster!! LOL! :haha: :scooter:
