I am sick and tired of the over inflated prices that after market suppliers charge for their products. I am not grouping all retailers together. There are those who sell a good product at a reasonable price, but dam few. One good example is the price of slip-on's. I have seen prices in the range of $500. to $1200. for nothing more than a hollow tube with some fancy high tech outer packaging like carbon fiber or titanium! Same thing is true for other FJR farkles. I guess that as long as some buyers have more money than brains, this type of rip-off will continue. As for me, my bike will stay pretty much stock, until there's a price war or boycott. :glare:

Have you checked OEM prices lately? They're right in step.

Keep in mind the price of a manufactured product is more than the sum of labor and material to build it. One has to purchase equipment and space to work in. The product must be designed, prototyped and tested. Then you must advertise so that your prospective customers are aware of you. And, of course, you must pay all manner of taxes. At the end of all this, you have an opportunity to sell a relatively low number of units (for model specific farkles) before the OEM changes the model, forcing you to re-engineer your product in many cases.

The acid test is this: find the best price you can, then decide if you could make something similar yourself for less money.

And if you're just too broke to carry the load, that's a bummer, but it ain't the manufacturers fault. FYI, I have no affiliation ot the MC or MC parts industries - I'm just a workin' stiff.

......................and huge liability costs which account for a large portion of things like helmets.

I agree that the price on some things seems incredibly high... until I figure what it would take for me to try and duplicate it myself.

What hacks me off along these lines is the motorcycle dealers that charge retail plus 25% or more on OEM parts. And they don't even stock much of anything. It is like free money for them. They look up the part number, order it and charge you an inflated price. No stocking costs, no money invested in inventory, etc. Then the dealers complain about people not buying local and supporting them and buying off the internet. Duh. Treat the customers right and maybe they would support the local dealer. If the part is on the shelf then I don't mind the cost as much but it really tees me off to have them order it and still charge the plus 25%. Then you get a dealer like University that sells for reasonable prices that let you know exactly how much the local shop is ripping you for. And University still seems to be in business even at the reduced prices..... Other dealers should pay attention.

Personally, I recently opted out of this splendid bit of wisdom. I regret that. Service is worth the money.

I am considering this. Since I'm a journeyman machinist, I believe I have the skills to offer fellow FJR owners a better mouse trap at a better price!

And how many farkles will it take to pay for that CNC mill you are going to need to go along with your skills....???....and the building to put it in, etc....???

Its a "swooze" moment: "Just do it!" There is a vast market out there in "FJR Land", and in "Sport-Touring Land". If you would receive one suggestion from the peanut gallery, please write a good business plan and have someone with marketing, cost/profit analysis, bookkeeping and tax skills discuss it with you.
