I wonder how many years are important with motorcycle tires.

I hope this is not a repost.
John T,

Thanks for this, I'll be checking mine and my kids tires right away.

*always* check the (for you Budweiser fans) born-on date on the tires you buy. I hate the way the media sensationalizes things like this, but if it saves one person.....

Buy PR2's for your bike. They can't be more than a year old! :)

Ngrider - I agree I don't care for the media makeing a lot of hype about this stuff. However, I was not aware of the issue, so I guess it made a impact on me anyway.

From above link:

"Attached is a spreadsheet containing a list of 159 incidents in which tires oldethan six years experienced tread / belt separations—most resulting in loss-of-control crashes. These incidents were the cause of 128 fatalities and 168 injuries. We have also included an additional 10 cases involving tires older than five years at the time of failure (half of which were more than five-and-a-half years old at the time of failure). These 10 incidents account for an additional 14 fatalities and 24 injuries."

That's interesting. I always had a personal policy to not use a motorcycle tire over 3 years old. But I thought just getting a new set was the cure. I never knew to check the date to see how old it was when I put it on.

This is going to create and internet purchasing dilemma.

Wow. I've never known that before. I guess I'm probably in the group of literally millions of Americans who are just poorly informed consumers that mistakenly assume that if the tire is bought new, it must be new. You could call me stupid (been called worse by better) or uneducated, but seriously, how are you supposed to know every damn little thing about *everything*? Sure, consumer reports, I spose, or good info passed along by parents/friends/internet. I'm glad I belong to this forum........alot of very knowledgeable nuts around here! Cool post John!

How ironic I just got into an argument over buying new tires for my 05 pickup with my wife. she thinks there is plenty of tread left. I checked the code and they were made in 01. showed her the video and am getting new tires this week.

GOOD POST!

I have found that the safety issue with most anything is a VERY strong influence on my wife's decision to agree to purchases..... ya gotta go with whatever works, sometimes!

I've only bought three sets of tires for my '77 Kawasaki KZ650 since I bought it new. True, its only got 25,000 miles on it, but I never had any age related tire issues. I guess that I assume the high performance tires made today are not near as robust as those of yester-year.
