I am preparing a order of parts from Mondak Motorsports and was going over my parts unlimited catalog and came across the Muzzys cooling fan, again. Here is the description:

*It is recommended that the stock plastic fan be replaced with an aluminum one when installing a performance exhaust system

*Prevents engine damage due to high temperatures encounter during prolonged high rpm/low airflow operation

*Features six blades to increase cooling system efficiency

Here's the question, is a aluminum cooling fan worth the $35? (I am sure it will be around $28-$30 since the MSRP is $35 before the Mondak Motorsports discount.) I have a stock exhaust and have not had cooling issues so I am not trying to solve any issues. I am just wondering if there is a benefit if I wanted to toss $30 at it.

Thanks,

Can't think of too many high rpm/low airflow situations that would cause concern. I would, however, think that aluminum would be less prone to flex, especially at higher temps, and therefore would be more efficient, especially in high temp/ low airflow situations.....like sitting in rush hour traffic on a hot day.

I'm waiting for Alan to post, then I will say I agree with him!

EDIT: Apparently he wasn't responding after all. No, you don't need one, thousands of FJR's working just fine without them.

The only high RPM, low airflow situation I can think of is power braking to smoke the rear tire off the bike.

The other thing is the factory headers are pretty thin and glow red on a regular basis. So why would an aftermarket exhaust be much worse.

I'm not seeing it.

I thought the aftermarket headers ran cooler than the stock exhaust because of the removal of the cats...I think the fan is a gimick.

How much is a stock plastic fan?

What is the quality Of the Alum. fan?

Just wondering if you could end up with a fan that could give you problems down the road(no pun intended).

Well, we already know that the Yammie fan works fine. I have seen no reports of fans breaking or coming apart. Why take the risk running something that MAY not be as reliable next to that expensive radiator?

They don't-certainly not in the fan area-except at the area the cats once occupied. Though in the case of the Holeshot, the Jet Hot might lower temps a bit. otherwise, I agree with S76.

Nope.... at least, no real performance benefit that the stock fan doesn't already provide.

However, there are many farkles that don't really provided much of anything, except the rich satisfaction that the owner may experience by installing/tinkering/adjusting/etc.

If you think it's cool, go for it! B)

Well, there would be a perf benefit if you spun it up to, oh, 237,000 rpm. But then the motor would run really cool.

Oh...Ok. I guess that's what I was thinking. Thanks.
