So as I was saying, I was in BF West Virginia with a melted piston on Memorial Day weekend. I called the AMA for assistance, but they couldn't even find my location on a map, much less find someone willing to come bail me out on a holiday weekend in BFWV. Did I mention that there was no cell service where I was, but I found a house in reasonable walking distance with a resident who was kind enough to let me use their phone. So after 20 minutes on the land line with the AMA, the woman on the other end said she was sorry, but she couldn't help me, so I called AAA. Imagine my surprise that not only couldn't they find my location on a map, they couldn't find any of the towns that the good samaritan with the phone said were the closest "big cities". Eventually, they were able to find one of these "big cities" and I gave them very precise instructions on how to find me.
TWO HOURS LATER I was on my way back to the motel in a flatbed towtruck with two good ole boys who called each other "Bubba" and "Champ", and no, I'm not making this **** up. At that particular moment in time, I was pretty disappointed in the AMA's services. At least I had AAA as a backup. Lots of good riding up until that point (500 miles of wicked twisties in the previous 24 hours). Loooooooong trip back to the motel.
Ahhhhh, if only it were always that simple. This past Memorial Day weekend, I just happened to be in BF Egypt (OK, it was actually BF West Virginia) when my poor little Derbi melted a piston. I'm definately an AMA supporter (15 year member now) and although I don't subscribe to the Motow service, since I have AAA Plus RV, I am a "Helpin' Hands" member. That's where you agree to do whatever you can (within reason) to help out a stranded fellow AMA Helpin' Hands member and you provide contact info for yourself. So far everyone knows what to do when they are in and around there home area. What would you do on a 3 or 4 thousand mile trip in bum "f" egypt/ Me here is what I would do. Reach into my wallet pull out my motow insurance card from AMA towing and give them a call anywhere in the good ole USA, problem solved.
They will either jump it or take me to a dealer.
