I just joined the AMA for the roadside assistance program. It was less expensive then the RV coverage from AAA. I am planning some solo trips out of my local area and thought it would be a good idea. Has anyone used their service?

I have used it to towed my car a few times. I have no complaints and it was free with my AMA membership.

I don't have this but have looked into the AAA motorcycle/RV one, kind of pricey. How much is this?

BTW - Some AMA Life members were really PO'd that some noob AMA members received the tow deal real cheap as an insentive, and the AMA did nothing to offer that same deal to Life members. It was a heated thread aimed at the AMA.

This has since been both addressed and amended by the AMA.

$39.00 per year regular membership. If you sign up with a credit card for automatic renewal, then you get the free roadside assistance. They call it the "Champion" membership. You can cancel whenever you want.

Another good one to check out is the Allstate Motor Club...it's always gotten good reviews and is cheaper than AAA, which has become quite expensive (I canceled AAA early last year and they still spam my snail mail box with "fake" memberships).

I live in Mass. It is my understanding that AAA for motorcycles is no go. I personally use RV Roadhelp which is Allstate. I have used them several times and they did come thru with their trip interuption coverage with flying colors after we were so rudely interupted by a Clyde Park forest rat.

I also am an AMA member and keeping RVRoadHelp as well. The towing on AMA is 35 miles limit, whereas RVRoadhelp does not have a limit. RvRoadhelp will tow to the nearest service facility and/or on-site labor.

I recently added motorcycle coverage to my basic AAA coverage for an additional $35.00 per year. AAA has a nationwide network for automobiles and RV's, so I took a chance with their service. It provides up to 4 100 mile tows per year. One 60 mile tow cost me over $300 about 3 years ago, from Belle Glade to Greater Yamaha in West Palm Beach.

My bike insurance is Progressive, and I added road service for under $10 per year. I've used it three times--a rock hit/flat, a wreck, and one regular flat. Two of these were way the hell in the middle of noplace and needed LONG tows. Have you priced towing, and taken mileage into consideration? This policy covers towing (flat bed) up to 150 miles per incident--that's WAY more than most. It was fantastic coverage and I can't recommend it highly enough. Ditto the service and coverage from Progressive. Not the cheapest to buy, but I've gotten MUCH more back in benefit payouts than I'll pay the rest of my life in premiums if I never make another single claim.

Good advice. AMA's service only covers towing up to 35 miles. I pay the extra on my Progressive policy too.

I'm still an AMA Champion member, but I joined for other reasons.

One data point. It sucked. Wife got a flat with our 3 year old and 2 year old in the van. She called them up and they said it would be over a two hour wait. This was about ten miles from Annapolis. Luckily, after a while, a nice guy helped her put the spare on. She called them back and they said they hadn't even contacted anyone, yet.

I sent an email to AMA. Got a card from the roadside service vendor saying 'sorry'.

I now have GEICO roadside service for the bike for $12/year.

Shoot, I haven't owned a car in 16 years and they spam my snail mail too. Nice job of hitting your demographic, guys... but it's probably the "oh, EVERYONE has a car!" attitude.

I got the AMA auto renewing membership when I switched to Dairyland insurance immediately after buying the FJR. The $$ spent got me a $50 something discount on the insurance, plus the roadside assistance applies to every rig I own (including the daughters car). Covering the wife and kid had value to me. As for progressive, I dropped them when I bought the FJR. The FJR was going to double my insurance costs. I was going to have to pay $400+ for my HD and $400+ for the FJR. With the AMA discount Dairyland was <$400 for both bikes. I do a couple of long trips a year in strange to me territory so the roadside assist is a feel good thing that's not costing me anything.

What's annoying with the AAA spam is that they make it appear as though you've already renewed (my spam says "Thank you for renewing with AAA!") when I clearly have not. When I canceled early last year, a few months later, they auto-charged my expired credit card...took a few angry phone calls to fix that one. Never again with AAA Carolinas...

I have used the AMA plan once. It worked well. But as in anything nowadays, patience is a virtue.
