Basically, use whatever makes you happy. If you wanna use Rotella and pay $12 a gallon, great. If you wanna use something else and pay $17 a quart, knock yourself out. There's no real difference except what you think.

Edit...Goddamm, that was fast. Got moved to NEPRT before I could finish writing that little post.

Sheesh!!

The Yamaha FSM says change oil every 10,000 kms (6000 miles), so no reason why Amzoil won't do the job. I use it and change it at that interval.

If you're going to change it every 6k, then I don't think it matters what you use for oil. But if you want to go significantly beyond that, I'd recommend sending your oil off to Blackstone Labs to see how much TBN you've got left.

I run Mobil 1 Extended Mileage and they say 10k is not a problem, try 12k.

Different oils have different amounts of additives, the TBN is what is the "anti-wear" part. The extended mileage stuff from Mobil 1 has a lot of that, which is then used up over time. Blackstone labs measures that after xx miles, and predicts how much further you could have gone. Each manufacturer uses a different anti-wear blend of additives so Mobil 1's isn't necessarily the same as Amsoil's.

If it isn't putting a lot of metal or fuel into the oil, and as long as it maintains it's viscosity and flashpoint, you can run oils until the TBN is used up. That's what Blackstone labs reports will tell you.

Of all the engines I've owned, the FJR is wearing the best. We do the blackstone labs for all our vehicles every 3-4 oil changes, and here's what they with the mileages listed:

FJR (82k): 10k - 12k

VFR (100k): 4k

Prelude (128k): 4k

Audi (105k): 5k (burned oil, sold, good riddance)

Subaru (118k): 8k

SV650 (32k) : 8k

EDITED to fix the link (thanks Mountain!)

I used Yama-lube for the first 140,000 km and changed it every 5,000 km. (3,000 miles)

I have been using Amsoil for the past 27,000 km and now change it every 10,000 km. (6,000 miles)

AmsOil. Good stuff, obviously. However, it is rather pricey. Necessary? Nope. The biggest problem you'll face with your oil will be dirt and other contaminants. This stuff accumulates no matter what you do. Two ways to keep oil seriously clean. First, change it @ 3k. Second, use a bypass oil filter rated for something like 1 micron. And since each one costs something like 10 times as much as a regular filter, AND I don't know you'd find the room for the remote mount, (they're huge), just stick with the frequent oil changes if ya want really clean oil. Is all that necessary? Nope. Your engine will last just about forever by just changing your oil and filter at the recommended intervals. Don't fuss over it. I change mine at every 5k... easier to remember that way. The FJR is a well built, low stress engine. It's water cooled and doesn't redline at 16k rpm. Oil "issues" are just not an issue.

Tires why we use tires, I thought they just float above the ground. WOW so what tires should I buy :yahoo:

Thank you This is by far the best bike i have ever Owned Thanks' for the input :)

+1 on Blackstone Labs. I've been running my FJR and my FJ on Amsoil for a long time. Been changing it out at a little over 5k miles, mainly due to seasonal changes (run 10w-40 in the winter and 20w-50 in the summer). Blackstone reports have been clean and suggest at least 6500 mile change intervals. Run Amsoil in our van to 10k miles and Blackstone reports are clean.

When I first started using Amsoil, it was a heck of a lot cheaper than other bike specific oils like Golden Spectro. Of course, I could also get a case of Havolin at 88 cents a quart back then. Shocking what it costs now.
