I've noticed that Wal-Mart has increased the price of Rotell 15-40 & 5-40 by a buck or two.

It's a trend that I have noticed in there auto department where some things are dirt cheap and after they see that they are HOT sellers, they start jacking up tha price a bit.

I think I will take 200 buck or so and buy-up me a stock of gallon bottles of it.

Rotella -- like all other diesel oils available in the US -- is being (or has just been) reformulated to make it compatible with the latest emissions control systems on 2007+ model diesel engines. These emissions systems require the new ULSD fuel and new oil forumulations to prevent them from being "poisoned".

So effectively, there's a model-change in process. And a model-change always means higher prices...

The Shell Rotella most on this site use is the 5/40 Synthetic. It has stayed the same but the price did go up$2 here in the bay area of Ca.. I bought a 6 pack of gallons before the price increase and now use it in all my bikes.

I use it too. I have several gallons in stock.

I just checked Rotella.com and you're right. The Rotella "Synthetic" 5W-40 hasn't changed *yet* -- i.e. it doesn't meed CJ-4 spec yet. I find that somewhat surprising, since it's the "top of the line" product.

Still, for motorcycle engines this may be a good thing since the CJ-4 spec limits the amount of zinc and phosphorus in the oil, which is pretty much what you buy a diesel oil for to begin with.

However, the regular 15w40 should be changing to CJ-4 now, which means a price increase, and the marketing people probably figured they could keep a certain spread in price between the "regular" stuff and the "synthetic".

Just picked up some Rotella this weekend at the local Wally. Prices as yet are unchanged here (Alabama). This local also carries the Rotella 15-40 dino in the 5-gallon bucket for around $37, in addition to the gallon and quart offerings of dino and synthetic.

Hey LSU, welcome back to the forum.

How did that "race card" work for you?

On the oil thing

I have noticed an inconsistancy in the local Wal-marts. We have a .05 per quart "disposal fee" as a State law.. so I've been told by Walmart. No Other place I go to has the extra charge on the ticket (already rolled into the price like gas?). Some local Walmarts add the fee and some don't. I guessing a programing glitch between stores? Oil at wally world IS inconsiatant at best.

Wally's here in Coldwater Mi. pulled all the Rotella's off the shelves about a year ago. I was lucky enough to be there when they did and bought all they had in the shopping carts at a really good price.

My stock is getting depleted now between several vehicles, started reserving the Rotella Synth for just the bikes. Never understood them pulling it in the first place while leaving it intact in other areas/states.

I agree with Scab, Wally's is the devil. They hook you , then hose you and drag the town along for the ride. It's Wally's or nothing and corporate is too removed from the locals to really give a damn as long as the company store turns a buck.

Seen the same thing in the grocery dept., alternatives like Kroger, etc. long gone leaving you with their choices.

A really good reason to continue to support your local gun shops rather than pimp them for the few bucks you'd save at Walmart. What happens when Wally's decides to get out of the business and all the locals have long ago folded ?

quick poll- for those who use shell rotella- 1) who uses the synthetic and who uses regular ? and 2) who adds additional additives to this oil (I forget what the original receipie calls for in Freds(?) post dome time ago?

Should you start feeling the headache start, I'd reccommend Advil Migraine strength. Please...

Absolutely correct. I wouldn't buy anything from Walmart...EVER. I know that my personal boycott isn't going to mean ****, but when **** DOES hit the fan (and it will), at least I will be able to say to myself that I had nothing to do with it. For me it's the principle of the thing.

And someone else is also right here, Sam probably IS rolling in his grave right now. I could go on...but I won't. Sorry...but I just couldn't keep my mouth shut. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.
