it gets better - then it gets worse:

I was told last week that my bike would be in this week -possibly by

wednesday- maybe sooner - but they weren't promising anything.

Called this morning -

No news. talked with the sales manager who said - he would be talking

to the Yamaha rep and would know something on Thursday - that was at

11:15 AM

saw on the fjr forum the list of where bikes have been shipped - on

low and behold - there was one at another local dealer.

Called them up - they said they didn't have one, but would check-

sure enough - dealer has bike and it will be here 80% chance by

thursday - 100% by Saturday.

Cool -- talk to him about their willingness to deal - talked about a

trade and told him to put my name on it.

Old dealer calls 20 minutes later and says, " Hey Chuck, we have a

brand new FJR on the floor and don't know what to do with it - are you

interested?" -

Hell yes - I'll be down after work.

Get there and they want my title and registration - I say -- Whoa big

fella - we haven't settled on a price - so you don't need anything.

Long story - a little shorter - they wanted 17,800.00 Out the door for

the bike (not counting trade in). They wanted to charge me 2600.00 in

Freight and set up.

I told them that they were WAY OFF BASE - and that even though I have

been bugging them for a bike - I was perfectly willing to walk out the

door.

Told them that I would sign my title over and write them a check for

11k - and that would be a good deal for both of us.

They told me that they had the only bike in SoCal and that this was the price.

I told them that they were full of crap and that I had a bike with my

name on it in El Cajon - waiting to be picked up by Saturday.

I knew this was going to happen when they wouldn't deal on the bike

way back when I offered to put my 500 down and negotiate prior to

delivery.

There was much other bull said back and forth - most of theirs was

lies. They couldn't give me a straight or honest answer during ANY of

the times I've talked with them. So - my recommendation is - STAY

AWAY FROM FUN BIKE CENTER - in San Diego.

THEY SUCK.

Hopefully, I will still have a new bike by this weekend. We'll see tomorrow.

Anyone want to share their freight and set up fees with me????

I had to pay a $500 set-up and delivery fee as my dealer subs out his new bikes to a guy that picks 'em up in Cypress (or where ever the LA warehouse is) puts 'em together and drops 'em off at the dealer, all shiny and ready to go.

DAYAM! Was there also a disclaimer requiring mass prelube before insertion?

Hey if you want to spend $17,800 you could ride that BMW. :D

Where the hell does 17800 come from??

MSRP is 13,499 +2,700 = 16,199

1,600 in taxes? You guys can have Cali all to yourselves

I'm sooo confooseed

Ask them if they are using "imaginary numbers" then pay with "imaginary cash"

I didn't look at all the numbers but that was msrp, plus tax, plus the rediculous freight and set up - plus dmv, etc.

yep - we are priveleged to live in sunny socal

on the other hand - it surely was a gorgeous day which would have been better had I been riding home this evening on a new bike.

mayhaps Saturday I'll have a new steed.

Well thats great. Some dealers have extras for the showroom floor that they can dangle. And some haven't seen one yet. The games have surely begun. Back to your post, RUN......

$17,800.00, huh? Shyeah.... okay.

Those must be some awfully killer SoCal drugs those guys are doing......

The taxes are for all the free healthcare and education we give to illegal....GONG!!!!!...The almost got political gong has been rung and this post will come to an end in 3, 2, 1

That price is just F'ed up... maybe in the days before this and other forums existed they could pull crap like that, but information is a very powerful thing, and places that pull that stuff will find they'll only be able to sell to desperate or stupid customers. And those usually won't come back. Then there are places like D&H, Sunnyside, and YamahaSportsCenter who treat you right, and get repeat business and word of mouth advertising.

Good move walking away. I hope the other bike deal happens smoother on Saturday.

Did they ask you to bend over??? Good grief! My '06 was $12500 + $750 tax to inndeeannurr + probaly another $250 or so for 1 year's worth of plate: #%^$#@excise tax, wheel tax etc. No BS setup fees etc, not from my dealer...hhmmm maybe that's part of why I keep buying bikes from him??! This state is worse than Cally-4-kneeaahhh for plate costs, and we aren't totally supporting certain "immigrant" groups that have their "rights"....yet. Actual plate, IIRC, is @ $12.00; go figure. Don't want to get started on that other subject......... DFO

I think many are missing what is actually wrong here. I don't have a problem with a dealer telling a person who doesn't participate in the pre-order that he has to pay a premium for a bike. Yeah, this guy is way out there, but that is his business.

The problem here, and the reason I think this dealer should be reported to Yamaha, and Yamaha should pull their dealship is this: Chuck went into the dealship last fall and told them he wanted to order one. They told him to not worry about it, he didn't have to give them a deposit, they are the biggest dealer around, they will have plenty of bikes, will give him a good deal blah blah blah. So they took away his ability to deal on the bike ahead of time. That is wrong. Then to hit him with rip-off prices at a time when it will be difficult to get a better deal from another dealer puts Chuck in a bad situation.

If these *******s had given Chuck the price when he first went in there, he could have gone and ordered a bike from a honest dealer, and maybe be riding now.

This dealer is a bunch of scumbags, and should be run out of the business.

Tom

I agree with you 100% Tom.

However..........

(there's always that "however")

When Chuck felt like he was getting the run-around back then, he should have known better and gone elsewhere.

I mean, if he would have asked any of the LD guys he knows who own FJRs, or would have come to this forum with his story, the advice would have been universal: Run! Do not walk, to another dealer.

I guess my point is, you need to be an informed, intelligent buyer. I bet Fun Bike Center will have no problem selling those FJRs at those ridiculous prices to idiots who don't know any better, or simply don't care. That's why they are still in business.

You are correct - I should have walked away months ago - when I was getting the run around on the initial "I want to put money down" conversation.

I didn't - and I take full responsibility for not noticing all the warning signs up front. I honestly DO know better. I have never paid full price for a bike or a car and all the warning signs were there.

I have no defense to my stupidity except to say that I have dealt with 3 dealerships lately - all three of which I would conduct business with a handshake.

Big Valley Honda - in Reno, NV - Great dealership (has changed hands over the last couple of years, but still have always treated me well and with respect)

Sierra BMW - Reno, NV - not the greatest deals in the world - but wonderful people, master class shop, and most helpful

Fresno 'BMW - Fresno, CA - again - not the best deals in the world, but if they tell you something, you can believe it or they will bust their butts to make it happen.

All of these guys could be counted on to deal with you honorably - not tack on any prices or have hidden agendas. Big Valley and Sierra BMW have gone WAY out of their way to support me, my riding habit and my bikes. They have backed me with warranty issues and have covered my rear several times by going the extra mile.

Did this give me a false sense of security? Maybe. Stupid? Definitely. And now I'm paying for it.

Yep - the dealer had the right to try to charge me an extra arm and leg. In fact - I was WILLING to pay retail for the bike. I was NOT willing to pay the extra for the bogus shipping and prep. I was willing to pay the appropriate doc fees and licensing. For that - I expected to get a reasonable offer on my used bike. Not a great offer as it has almost 100,000 miles on it - but a legitimate offer where they could make a profit on the resale of the bike - not a full retail "sell it myself" offer.

That they gave me false assurances - that removed my bargaining power. to me that is a classic

Bait and Switch.

should I not end up with a bike with a fair price I will definitely be ticked.

Back in October, I tried the local Yamaha dealers and all of them wanted to basically add around 3000 for their profit, for the privilage of selling me the bike. I was recommended to check out Southbay in San Diego. The deal I worked out with Ted was much better. With Tax, Title, etc the price was below the MSRP. Final price was 13,420 (OTD). I've heard of better prices in other states... but this was MUCH better than 18k quoted from one of the local shops.

I agree with you 100% Tom.

This sounds a little like the argument about whether it is OK to steal a car if it is unlocked and the keys are in it. Obviously it is not OK. This dealer is ripping people off. To defend it by saying it is the buyers responsibilty to know all of their deceitful tactics is really not right.

If a person walks into a dealership representing a major brand of motor vehicles and asks about ordering a vehicle and is told not to worry, they have plenty coming in, we will give you a good deal, and you don't have to give us a deposit, the person should be reasonably sure that they are being told the truth. I don't think getting quoted over 2 grand more than list price plus every possible add on could be considered a good deal by anyone.

It would be completely different if someone didn't decide they wanted one until they saw one, then ran out and found a dealer that had one in stock. That person would expect to pay a premium, but not a $2,000 premium.

It will be interesting to hear what Chuck gets told by Yamaha. When they hear a customer asked to put down a deposit and was told not to I suspect the crap is going hit the fan big time.

Of course this could work to MY advantage, "For Sale, 2003 FJR1300. $10,000 less than a 2006 model!!!"
