A friend here at work bought his first bike a few months ago. It's a sportster 1200. He is a pretty big dude, lots of tats, piercing in his lip. Despite his rather confrontational appearance, he's actually a pretty cool guy.

Anyway, he was out riding with a friend, who almost missed a right turn. The friend in front braked hard and turned. His lack of experience caused him to lock up the front brakes, and he basically pulled a stoppie on the HD.

So he used to joke with me, and make fun of my gear. What's the point of riding a motorcycle with all that stuff on? (stuff to that effect)

Needless to say, he has no tats left on his right arm from the road rash, his knucles are tore up pretty good, and right leg is rashed up pretty good too. At least he did have a beanie helmet on, cause he landed on the top of his head, probably saved his life.

I haven't said a thing about it, and he is avoiding me like the plague.... I wonder why?? :dntknw:

Personally, I would ask him how he's doing and do my best to not appear judgemental. Then, he may even ask advice later. My .02

Oh, I don't wish that sort of harm on anyone. I know he's o.k. cause he's here, he's probably in some pain though.

I think he's avoiding me simply because of how he used to poke fun at me for wearing gear. I'm not looking to preach or anything.

call me an ******* but I would say something. I personally would say that I have had road rash in the past too and now you understand why I wear gear. And that is a non judgemental comment.

The site of my brother-in-law trying to smoke several days after dropping his Harley made me a strong believer in a great pair of gloves.

One of the shop guys here at work blew a corner big time about 1.5 months ago. I visited him in the long-term rehab facility about 2 weeks ago. from the chin down he barely had a scratch, but he smashed the side of his head hard enough to eject his right eye ball. He has had to have several sections of his skull removed to relieve the pressure on his brain. It looks like he will make a pretty good recovery, and maybe he will even be able to come back to work one day, but he has a long road ahead of him, and I don't even want to think about his medical bills. I wonder if his insurance will even cover a penny of his bills, since he was issued a DUI.

I used to get a lot of grief about my AGATT, and my Aerostich "Snowmobile Suit." Amazingly enough since this accident I haven't gotten one smart *** comment, and a few, not all, of the other riders here have invested in helmets. It is a real shame that it took one guy messing himself up so bad to make it happen.

Would look to me that this is more a story of RWD. If he was sober he probably would not have needed AGATT since he probably would still be riding.

Hard to say. It sounds like there were LOTS of variables, but if he had a helmet on, he probably would have walked away, drunk or not. You can Monday morning quarterback it all day, but wearing the gear wouldn't have hurt.

I agree. A genuine enquiry as to his welfare might be appreciated. Do try to keep the 'I-told-you-so' look off your face. If the guy has half a brain cell, he already knows that.

I've got half a brain cell myself, matter of fact. So when I went over in July and tumbled through a patch of roadside rocks, that Cycleport Kevlar Mesh outfit came in damn handy. And the full-face helmet, which has major gouges from the forehead area all the way down to the lower jaw. The missing half of the brain cell accounts for the fact that my hands were crunched and scraped up pretty damn painfully because it was over 90 degrees and I'd taken off my leather gloves "for comfort." For the last time. I had some bruises and stiffness for a while, just from the impact, but no breaks or even scrapes anywhere else. My hands still look a little funny, however.
