Just called my local NorCal Yamaha dealer to order all the requisite parts to do a CCT upgrade and was told by the friendly and knowledgeable rep that he had never seen a service memo from Yamaha discussing a replacement CCT. He also stated that the part number I gave him was just a secondary part number for the standard CCT and that there was no reason to believe this was an upgrade.

So, at the risk of being flamed, what's up with all the CCT talk?

BTW, the part # I gave him was 5jw12210-10-00.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

You want 5JW-12210-10-00 You probably have 5JW-12210-01-00

The newest version has a magic blue dot. Anyway, it's was redesigned in 2008 I believe. By outward appearance, you won't notice much different other than the blue dot. In the bike, you will probably hear less chain slap.

Yep. It wouldn't be the first time that a dealer wrench didn't know some of the minutia about FJRs that is more or less common knowledge around here. ;)

Is your dealer going to change it for you too? If so, make sure they know they have to watch and/or secure the chain on the bottom sprocket, which means removing the timing cover, or in all likelihood it will skip a tooth. They probably don't know that either. Seems to happen to the dealer service guys pretty often.

There is no service memo as such, just an upgraded CCT as mentioned above.

The old model CCT was prone to failures.

There's heaps of info about it on the forum including the best way how to replace it yourself.

Ah crap! I've just finished my valve clearance check, getting everything back together - when I see this post.

To save me searching through endless posts, is a CCT upgrade something I should consider for my '04? I don't have any issues with it - at the moment.

I'll study the subject in detail this evening.

Thanks guys.

yes yes yes...says moi, a grenaded engine victim...and ironically, I ride an '04

if you wish to wait for the more than likely "marbles in a can" sound at idle when ice cold...then ok...

in my situation, I did hear the noise and ignored it 1 week too long...the new CCT was in transit when it went boom at 90k mi

Thank you very much, I'll get one ordered today.

Perfect time to do it, the bike is still naked and 'in the air' on my Christmas present to me

I'm curious...how many miles ???

but engines have grenaded at 35k and at 120k...that old CCT was a POS with the springs from the factory hit or miss in quality and longevity...lotsa info all over the forum

I remember like 5 committing suicide before we got a handle on what was happening and then a few months later the new CCT came out...of course, mine was the 5th, but it was my fault I didn't take the sound seriously enough

So, suffice it to say, it may be a problem, it may not.

I may have a perfectly good one, I may not.

It might blow up any second, it might not.

I might get a warning noise, I might not.

The new one might be better, it might not.

I hate you all.

Luckily, this is a low kilometer bike. I bought it with around 32,000k on it and I only put about 8,000 on it last year - so about 24,000 miles.

I had read about CCT failures on the forum but, for some reason, I didn't associate it with mine - duh!!

Ok, so what five?

Cause I know of exactly three.

Right...Patriot's, Howie's, and OCFJR's right? Not sure about OC, but the other two for sure. AND, if I 'member right, they all got warning, just didn't realize it would turn so catastrophic as fast as it did.

On my 2005, during cold engine deceleration, I heard the marbles rattling against the right timing cover loudly. Anyone that allows the bike to warm up, or who pull the clutch instead of using engine compression to slow down when the engine is cold might never hear it. The sound is a loose timing chain, and it was all the reason I needed to make the change.

Changed the CCT out on my previous '06 at 50K miles. The blue dot version has a much stiffer spring and revised plunger.

Although my '06 was fairly quiet at idle, there was always what I thought was a little *too* much noise. After the CCT change it was much quieter at idle. If you're hearing any cam chain related noise it's cheap insurance for piece of mind and a solid engine.

Close dork.

Ionbeam, then Howie, then Patriot.
