My cruise has been acting up lately. Works sometimes and sometimes not. I opened up the control unit and used a heat gun for a while just in case there might be some moisture in it. I also cleaned the contact points between the buttons and the circuit board. I went on a little ride and thought I had fixed it but then it started acting up again.

When I push the on button the led light will come on but when I hit the set button the led light goes off. If I play this game for a couple dozen times the cruise will eventually work . It will usually hold good when it actually works, very seldom will it drop out.

I am getting by with it the way it is but if anyone has an idea I would like to hear it. Smitty did the install for me so I don't know squat about how it is installed , other then I am sure it was installed correctly.

Sounds like a control pad problem for sure. Is it solidly mounted or does it have a little room to flex a little bit. The behavior is as if it mistakes "Set" for "Off" which is a completely different connection.

If you cleaned the contacts under the buttons, it sounds like the contral pad was not waterproofed. A pad that's been sealed would be difficult to open up.

Test the other buttons. Does it turn off when you press Off? Will it set with the Resume button instead of the Set button? (It should, by the way.) Does it accelerate or decelerate if you tape or hold those buttons?

I thought this was interesting. I turned the main switch on, did not start the bike, and turned the cc on. The on led came on and then I pushed the set button and the on light stayed on . I did this several times and everything worked as it is supose to. I also hit the acc. button and it stayed on.

Then I started the bike and hit the on switch and the led light came on , then I hit the set button and the led turned off. I did this about 6 times and when I hit the set button the on led turned off.

Finally after a few times the on led stayed on when I hit set. Mind you I was just setting still , then I increased the rpm and all three of the led's would flicker in tune with the rpm . I could increase and decrease the rpm and the led flickering would go up or down with it.

After a couple a minutes the led's became stable no matter what I did with the rpm. Going to go for a ride tomorrow and check it out but I doubt anything has changed.

Makes one wonder " What the Hell is going on ".

Electronically speaking, the ON button is just a switch that enables the power lead that feeds the servo's control electronics, while the set and accel buttons are inputs to the servo.

In theory, nothing 'down below' in the servo should cause the 'on' led to go out, so I suspect that the control pad is weird, OR your power feed (or ground) to the pad is 'not quite right'.

Think loose connection, corroded connection or similar.

Corroded connection somewhere is a good possibility. When I installed mine I did it with crimp taps, thing lasted all of 3 months before it got flaky. I went through and redidi all the connections with soldered connections and heat-shrink tubing to seal. No trouble since.

Of course the problem is, since you didn't put it in, it's a bit of a chore finding those power and ground taps.
