Cops: Driver accelerated toward fallen motorcyclist, killed him
Friday, 06 July 2007
From staff reports
Pocono Mountain Regional Police are looking for a late 1980s, dark-blue Buick involved in a fatal hit-and-run Tuesday. Police said Robert Monaco, 45, Blakeslee, was headed north on Route 115 in Tunkhannock Township, near Pocono International Raceway on a 2001 Yamaha motorcycle when he hit a deer.
That caused him to lose control of the bike as it flipped over and threw him off.
He was injured but still conscious and lying on the highway. Several witnesses came to his aid. They saw a car approaching at high speed. They tried to flag the car down for help.
Instead, they told police, the car accelerated. It hit Monaco, who was still lying on the roadway, and fled.
Monaco was pronounced dead on scene by the Monroe County Coroner’s office.
Several witness chased the car. They were unable to get a license plate number, but they did get a description.
The car had a sheriff decal on the back window and was occupied by two men and a woman. It was last seen on Kuhenbeaker Road.
Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Sgt. Chris Wagner at PMRP, 895-2400.
