Damn man, That SUCKS!!!

I just went through this whole charade about a month ago. You can get the plastic repainted, but be sure you take it to a legit body shop who can show you examples of his work. I got a crappy paint job, and am not happy with it, although it does look better than being all scratched up.

Colorite paint is not cheap, but if your gonna have it done, may as well do it right. 80 bucks for a half pint, 14 bucks for reducer. A shop can shoot their own clear coat. Get it fixed, so you don't have to look at it, and remember, **** happens.....

The closest I ever cam to dropping the FJR was when a pant leg pulled the kickstand back. Now I tend to leave my foot pushing on the kickstand until the weight of the bike is on in (in most situations)
Or you could do like twn and leave your foot underneath the stand :dribble: , thus assuring youself it was down

OOOOOOOOH :nhl_crach:

Thanks all for the input and understanding...........

Had a very bad dream last night about the tip over........ "Did I actually have the kick stand down in the first place?"

How long do the dreams last?

+ one here.....

i had a zero speed drop about two days ago.....

managed to limit the damage , but im still pissed off.....

was in a car park, just touched the font brake, and the next thing i know, im past the

point of no return..... didnt hurt my self (apart from pride that is) and from what i see here, i got off lightly.

scrape.jpg

this is the only noticable damage. there are minor scrapes on one small point of the right fairing, but if you are not

looking too hard, you cant see them, and some very minor marks on the edge of the right side can.

Sorry to hear about another ZSD. It can happen. I've dropped every bike I've owned, some with not a scratch ('04) and some pretty bashed (AE). Mine was surreal. I stopped to take a leak and see the view just below the summit of Mt. Evans on the way back from WFO. Got off the bike, took care of business, walked to the edge of the cliff to enjoy the view. Was like 5 minutes. Turned to go back to the bike and head down the mountain. As I was walking back to the bike, it started moving. Time slowed. Or was it oxygen deprivation? The bike kept accelerating... sideways. WHAM! It hit VERY hard on the left side. I SWEAR the wheels and bag went up in the air and then back down. I was stunned, mouth hanging open in disbelief.

Went over to the bike thinking I'd never be able to pick it up at this altitude. I could really feel the lack of O2. I grabbed it (not using that back assward technique) and hauled it right up. I was quite surprised at that. The whole left side is trashed. Still. Never fixed it yet. Touched up the paint in a couple places, but otherwise still wearing the battle scars. Well, ok the parking lot scars. I was pissed. And depressed. What a way to end that beautiful experience.

I have since lowered my AE a smidge with the Penske shock. At the same time, I took my side grinder and cut back the sidestand stop so that the bike leans over a lot more. The foot of the sidestand sits about 1 width farther forward, and the bike is definitely biased to the left. Doesn't mean it won't go over again, but at least it's going to be farther "over center".

I hearby claim the dubious distinction of the highest tipover in the United States. Unless you actually dumped your bike at the Mt. Evans summit parking lot. I was at about 13500 feet when it happened.

I think this is a worth while mod. Doesn't make things perfect but helps allot. Sorry about your ZSD. They get expensive fast.

KICKSTANDS...Sheesh! The root of all FJR evil.

It's a tip-over, not a crash...If that's a help!

Tip-overs don't count as crashes. I had one with just over 700 miles, at the end of my own driveway. All cosmetic, but still cost $400.

Wow! Lucky me! I must have gotten one of the rare & sought-after non-defective kickstands. Either that or I have constantly outsmarted the demonically possessed one that's on my bike.

Besides, after reading about and seeing the pictures of those who have experienced a ZSD on the right hand side, Yamaha needs to address the missing kickstand on THAT side of the bike. :dribble:

+1

After reading so much info on the "BAD" kickstand (side stand) on the FJR I went out to the garage and really checked it out.

I just got a new dremel for Christmas and I thought this might be a good project to test it on.

Still on the center stand I put the side stand down, then back up, then down again and back up. I then took the bike off the center stand and actually put the bike to rest on the side stand. I shook the bike, I pushed on it and I even sat on it. I, for the life of me, cannot find a problem. Fact is if the bike were to lean over much more I would need to double up on my work-out just so I could still get it up right.

If you don't get the side stand all the way down I can see how this could cause some embarrassing moments and a few scratches. I did this on a Honda shadow spirit I once had (a lesson remembered).

Beal, I do feel your pain. I have been there.

I suffered a "senior" moment a couple of weeks ago. Rode into the parking lot at work. FORGOT to put down the side stand. Discovered my failure as I was being catapulted away from the bike. Broke the ball off of the clutch lever. That was it. The beauty of having a 29year old bike...No one expects it to be scarfree!
