I suspect that the issue back in 2003/2004 of some dry splines hasn't really been a problem for years since I think they straightened it out in about 2005.

Seeing that it's Friday, a completely unscientific poll is in order.

Dare I ask only Gen 2 owners that have checked their splines to answer or will that just encourage Gen 1 owners and those that have never checked splines to stuff the ballot box?

I dunno.

Have fun.

It's Thursday, Matt. Unless, of course, you are simply baiting the masses (which you would never do).
I'm taking the more liberal defnition of Friday as the last day of the work week....for most anyway. However, point noted and to be honest I have a two-fold purpose of hoping the results affirm my instinct....but also prepared for the train to go off the tracks.

I hear a train a comin', it's rolling round the bend...

I ain't seen no derailment, since I don't know when...

Happy Thu Friday to you Matt!

I think I gave Yami a break, because I can't remember if there was anything more than a hint of grease on them. I do remember they were NOT rusty yet.

:)

Ooops! I forgot to vote three times. I've done three sets of Gen-II splines so far. All the same.

And that's very possible a very important distinction.

I think I've seen two or three questions the past few weeks by people asking vainly about splines....and as I grow older and more curmudgeonly....I'm wondering if it's become like the vestigial appendix of the FJR? Like people with Gen 2 still thinking they have a ticker, still thinking the alternator has a minuscule reserve capacity, etc.

I'm wondering if we'll be able to get to a point and say, "Don't bother checking your splines. We really haven't heard of anybody's being rusty since 2004. It's an old problem Yamaha fixed. You wanna do something....go do a TBS instead."

When I bought my 06 I had read (perhaps here) that a few new 06 owners noticed that the splines were not greased, and more importantly not lubed with a high "Moly" content grease.

When I took my bike in for it's 600 mile check up, I mentioned this to the service guy , and told him I wanted him to check , and if needed, grease the splines with the proper lube.

He said it should have been done at the factory, and we hit the deal that if indeed they were not greased properly, it would be considered a warrenty issue, and I would not have to pay for the labor...but if upon investigation it turned out they were greased correctly, and with the proper lube, I would pay for the labor of him checking.

When I went to to pick up the bike, there was no charge on the bill for the spline lube, and the tech said although there was some grease on them, it was not a Moly grease, and it was a very light coating.

I will likely spring for some of that Krytox synthetic lube when it comes time to do the splines again.

I had some light rust on my 2007 at 14,000 miles.

baiting the masses

:p

Oh come on! Iszat what you really wanted to say? Subliminal suggestion at it's finest there.

Oh Boy! It's 'Fryday'!!!!! :yahoo:

I noticed my spline was a bit dry this morning. Hey, it's a 59' model, guess it's to be expected

:jester:

At great personal risk of being outed by ODOT; what and where are my splines and why would I check them and if I did check them then what? Please be kind

Nope, I just changed my rear tire last week on my '07 and it was dry as a bone.

My axle was also dry as a bone and covered with white chalky corrosion where it went into the long spacer inside the pumpkin, as was the inside of the spacer. I had to hammer it out.

Mine were dry as the proverbial popcorn fart-both sides of the u-joint and a slight coating of rust..Lubed them good with boy butter..good tip fron the forum!
