If there are enough interested folks I’d like to organize a 2-up ride for EOM – heck, if there isn’t much enthusiasm I’m going to do it anyway. I know there’re only 6 months until EOM, but I think I can put this together if I focus! My initial thoughts are:

- Focused on 2-up riders – but calm, serene solos are welcome too!

- Mission: Safely enjoy the ride, the scenery, and most of all riding with your pillion and the company of others – and food, I love food. Stopping to smell the roses is in this case a good thing.

- Rough sked would be to have a rider's brief at 0800 and depart ~0900 - return whenever we’re done

- What it wouldn’t be: a speed contest, a mileage contest, an endurance contest.

Lorie and I are roughly 3 hours east of the EOM site and between now and then I’m sure I could explore some routes and points of interest and put together some rides for considerations. I’d like to contribute to EOM this year and maybe this is how I can do it!

So, anyone interested?

Hi Jim, I guess I won't be riding with you. I'm pretty sure that calm & serene aren't how my riding would be described....... ;) BUT Jim Meadows & I talked briefly about mapping a ride out for the 2up/sedate/site seeing rider type. If you'd like that job, then you're definitely welcome to it. Might I make a suggestion? Stop at the visitor center & take the ride thru the bottom of New River Gorge. Be aware that there are a few serious switchbacks going into the road that runs thru the bottom... but manageable especially if you know they are there. The views are beautiful!

There is a really cool hollow down in the bottom that the everyday person would never know was there. Maybe Jim M can explain exactly where it is located.

I'm in there!

:)

Seriously!

No, really!!!

Remember, my 10-year old daughter doesn't like more than one hour stretches in the saddle. She asked me last night if the hotel has a pool. I suggested she bring skates.

:)

Yes Heidi, I'll take the task. I PMed Jim (splbnk) for some suggestons. And thanks for the New River Gorge suggestions.

If you haven't been to the New River Gorge .... you must go. Last year we rode down to the bottom and yes there is a lot of switch backs. Had to wait for the bus in front of us to "work" his way around each corner.

At the bottom you can't hear the traffic from up above. But you can hear the laughter from the rafters.

Hi-ya Jim,

I'll be 2 up again also.

I organized the last two 2-up EOM rides.

(although both times we only had about half 2-up, it was more like the "anti hair-on-fire ride")

May I recommend that everyone agree, in advance, to just ride the "Pace" on this particular event?

That will let some stretch their legs in twisties if they want, and we can still ride as a group.

- In '05 we kept the reins pulled up for the 1st half, then wicked it up in the 2nd half. (purely based on group dynamic)

(except for Gary not knowing he outran a cop on 129. )

- In '06 we kept adjusting tempo based on the leader catching sight of the caboose in the straights & direction changes.

It was wet at times and we had some novices, so it stayed very controlled.

Riding the Pace allows these adjustments.

On both rides we stopped to smell the roses several times.

'05 we hit a lookout on the Skyway, a waterfall, and a local favorite burger stand.

Last year, we visited Blowing Rock and had lunch on Mount Mitchell along the BRP.

Sounds like you are thinking along the same lines...

Just a thought for Heidi or another anyone else that wants to help:

Slappy's web site for EOM06 is still up and running and formated.

Could someone just swap out a few graphics and recycle that as the event web site?

It's already in the works Brent. Travis is supposed to be swapping the info out & will post it up when it's done. I've already picked out a picture for the home page, etc. Not sure when he'll be done, but it has been considered.

Great minds think alike, eh?

As far as the 2up ride of '05... very nice riding "pace" indeed. I enjoy riding the PACE style. Well, at least the part about wicking it up thru the curves & slowing in the straights. I find myself riding like this often when I'm with riders of different riding styles. It wasn't that long ago that "I" was always the one going fast in the straights to catch up. Now, that only happens sometimes.

I will have a pillion again this year for EOM and would be interested in joining you on a 2-up ride.

I sure am!

That is exactly the type of ride I want to be on when 2 up. I can go be mental man anytime when I am riding alone, but Hope is coming and would like to see some stuff besides the back of my helmet. And a good resturant, whether fancy or plain, makes it all joy!

If I am expecting her to ride 2 days down there, with the first day being 12 hours of slab, and another 12 again on the way back home, there needs to be some relaxing, scenic, entertaining riding once we get there.

Thank you!

Bob

Jim, I believe there are some waterfalls around & probably some covered bridges, too. Chicks'll probably dig that! Jim Meadows definitely knows of at least 1 waterfall near Warm Springs. Also, a jaunt thru Goshen Pass would be nice and scenic (& twisty). Lake Moomaw or the rest stop at Goshen Pass would be good spots for a picnic. Not sure you'd be into that. That would require actually carrying food... but definitely different that the same ol' same ol'.

I was hoping you'd volunteer this year. If Nancy decides to make the trip, We'll certainly join you. Thanks,

Right now the wife is not coming; however I wouldn't mind riding with you guys and bring back a lot of pictures of what she will miss.

I am damn fond of dams. Any dams in the area to visit two-up?
You know what Cherryman, that's a good question... that I cannot answer. I'll bet there probably is. When I was there I saw lots of coal mines/processing plants if that counts for anything. Gotta' ask the local about the damn dams.

the wife hasn't decided if she is coming yet or not, but i was wondering what the 2-up thing we have going on here is. Do we still meet up with everyone there? and if thats the case I assume we will just have a more relaxed riding style for the day trips while we are up there?

Well Jim, it looks like enough people want to participate. You now have your work cut out for you. Welcome to the club.

Allen, yes you will still be with everyone else. When you leave the hotel you might be going in the opposite direction. That's all. There will be all kinds of riding groups. This one might be mellower & more scenic than others... but, you know what? There will be people of all styles of riding. I think that it's a safe bet that riders in this group are out to smell the flowers. If not careful, you could end up 2-up w/ a group that rides a "hair on fire" pace.

Not that a group like that requires you to keep up. I always say "ride your own ride". If you desire to get into a different group, talk with people to see where you'll fit in best. Also, I'm sure there are individuals who won't group ride at all & ride by themselves or there will probably be people who make their own routes.

There will be people who will step up to lead a ride. There always is. Also, leading a ride doesn't mean that the lead rider cannot be passed, either... but if you pass the leader it might be good idea to know where you're going.

And folks, I'm speaking for myself when I say: Please don't depend on me to lead a group everyday. (set a pace, read the map so nobody makes wrong turns, be sure the group stays together, etc) (Ask yamaholic to do it) I'll probably end up leading one ride but sometimes it is definitely most fun to follow... w/ no map reading, etc.

I found myself looking for people with GPS units, last year.

If you have one and look like you might know how to use it,

don't be surprised to see me lining up in the parking lot behind you.
