Some of you may have noticed from my sig that I have a personal webpage. I taught myself a little HTML 10 years ago while stuck at home recuperating from high-siding my R1. I'm no master of the code, but I get the general jist. Anyway, I was trying to create a webpage for some friends on another motorcycle forum, which would incorporate a word document containing a gear ratio chart...very handy for sprocket selection. I CANNOT get it to display this Word document! The file containing the document is in my file manager. I can open it and see it, but it just won't display on the page. I tried printing the chart, then scanning it and saving it as a jpg and uploading that. I got it to display that way, but I couldn't get it to a point where the chart was both legible, and a useable size, no matter how much I messed with the resolution, or size. The word doc is superbly legible, but I can't get it to display a .doc file on the webpage. Anybody here savvy enough with HTML to help me make this work?

TIA,

May very well be a restriction from your provider. Word docs can contain macro code that can be lethal/infectious.

My best suggestion is PDF the Word doc and then display it as a graphic. Much more universal display results and you won't be plagued by scaling or resolution or page-size.

If you need help making the PDF, shoot me a PM. I can generate it for you in about 10 seconds.

As Jeff said, you can make it into a PDF or Convert the Document into a JPG (jpeg) file but make sure it is size optimized.

That sounds like both a good idea and a generous offer. Now if only I could find the option to add an attachement to a PM, I'd be in business. I'm just feelin' stupider (dumberer?) by the minute.

PM Jeff or Myself with your email address. This would be the most easiest way... virus free of course!

But of course. E-mail address is in my overly crowded sig. *Admin edit, removed your email address from public/search engine/spam view, please PM it to whomever*

Send me your e-mail address and I'll send you a very useful word doc. Well, not so useful for an FJR, but for something with sprockets, it's da bomb.

There are countless, free PDF writers that allow you to print a word or other file into PDF.

My free version of Adobe won't do it. You have to get a paid version of Adobe for that. Seeing as how this is the first time I've had the need, not feeling inclined to pay them $10/month for the priviledge.

The website Doc2PDF Online will convert a Word document to a PDF, and e-mail you the result, at no charge. It can handle all Microsoft Office formats (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), and is quick and easy.

The site DoPDF has a free download of a Windows printer driver that creates PDF output from any application. I've had good luck with it.

Yes, as Jeff said it wouldn't accept a pdf either, but the gif he created for me worked perfectly. HiYoSilver tried to help me out as well, but for some wacky reason, when I sent him the word doc, it changed from my PC to his and the graph turned into an endless string of useless numbers. I looked at the attachment in my outbox and it looked fine, but apparently it wasn't fine when it got to him. No wonder we were both confused. Just one of those things we'll probably never know the answer to. I have occassionally run into other mail servers that just don't get along with mine (most notably earthlink), his must be one of them.

On the off chance that anybody's interested in the aforementioned sprocket ratio chart, you'll find it along with a brief explanation of what to do with it HERE.

Thanks to all who offered up help!
